Mangaluru: Circle inspector allegedly sent on leave, cops stage protest, locals join in

Mangaluru, Dec 8: In a rare instance, the personnel of Mangaluru rural station here on Tuesday December 8 rose in protest against their own department over the alleged action taken against the circle inspector (CI) of the same police station.

Circle inspector Pramod

Abubakker Siddique (arrested)

It is said that CI Pramod of Mangaluru rural police station has been reportedly suspended and sent on leave for 10 days.

Sources said that CI Pramod had on Monday December 7 arrested a person identified as Abubakker Siddique in connection to the Ulaibettu clashes that had occured last year. Following the arrest, Pramod has been sent on 10 days' leave due to alleged political pressure, sources said.

The cops of Mangaluru rural police station came out in support of the CI, protesting against the move and refused to resume duty until the order is withdrawn. Personnel of other police stations like Kadri, Panambur and others also joined in.

Soon, even locals irrespective of caste and community and different organizations like HJV and DYFI also joined the protest.

Speaking to reporters, Alwyn, a local, said, "Our inspector Pramod is like a lion, we do not want a mouse-like inspector to take charge in his place. He should be reinstated within half an hour, or we will spend the night protesting here. Do the persons who have suspended CI Pramod have any shame? Do they know what the condition of this police station is? Instead of improving the police station, an honest inspector who arrested a rowdy has been suspended and sent home.

"Let the chief minister come and see the state of affairs in Dakshina Kannada. If Pramod is not reinstated, we will intensify our protest and block the roads and gherao the police commissioner's office. We will not keep quiet," he warned.

Subhash Padil of Hindu Jagarana Vedike, who also joined the protest, said, "Pramod sir is an honest officer who does his duty without considering caste or creed of the accused in any case. He has been suspended because he arrested a rowdy-sheeter. I think the sand mafia is behind this. Hindu Jagarana Vedike along with the locals will continue our protest till the order is revoked."

DCP Shantharaju arrived at the spot and urged the cops to come into the station and discuss the matter, but they refused.

Police commissioner S Murugan also came to speak to the protestors, but they kept up their demand. The police commissioner said that he had not passed any order to send Pramod on leave or to suspend him, and that there was no such order from the government either. He also said that Pramod had himself taken leave and he had not been suspended. However, the protestors refused to believe him and demanded that Pramod be called to the spot if he had not been sent on leave. When the commissioner said he did not know where Pramod was, one of the protestors came forward to file a 'missing' complaint.

The protestors then blocked Padil-Nantoor stretch in front of the police station, stopping vehicles and causing disruption in traffic.

Finally, Pramod was called to the spot and he told the protestors that he would be joining back duty on Wednesday December 9 and that everything was fine. The protestors, convinced by his words, finally withdrew the agitation and celebrated. Sources said that bowing to pressure from cops and locals, the leave order was withdrawn.

It is learnt that the accused Abubakker Siddique had attempted to sexually assault a woman during the Ulaibettu clashes and had gone absconding since then. He is also an accused in an attempt-to-murder case, it is learnt. Circle inspector Pramod arrested Abubakker on Monday and produced him in court, which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days. The protesting cops and locals alleged that soon after Abubakker's arrest, two politicians of Dakshina Kannada put pressure on the police department to 'transfer' Pramod, after which he was sent on leave, they said.

Honest Police officials like CI Pramod need support from the 'Aam Aadmi' (you & I), since they cannot expect to get it from the political class, or the administrative set up, which are having their own selfish agenda.

Kudos to the fearless CI Pramod and may God be his moral support and strength, now and always. Our prayers and good wishes are always with you and other brave, sincere, dedicated police personnel.

This was a angry response of policemen for suspending a honest inspector. The suspension was for arresting a hardened criminal having political affiliation. This was just appease a certain votebank.

There were only locals and primarily policemen agitating against the injustice. The inspector was at home when the agitation started and he came to cool the situation.

This agitation had no political colours and none of the so called people were there leading the agitation.

If they were there, it is only as spectators and the media added their names and spoilt the honest agitation of policemen against political pressures.

I know as I was on the spot as spectator.

First of all a big Salute to Mr. Pramod Kumar Sir and his team. It is every citizens duty to Support police and Army as you aware during Chennai and other flood affected area only Police and Army people are rescued so many people and not a single politician from the region or from other state donated single rupee or there with people of Chennai. One of my friend told that all Ministers of ADMK we settled in Mumbai or Bangalore with their family This is reality. So it is request from my side please don't see any religion or region once culprit is arrested, see him from the point what crime he has done and not from the point of religion or region. Support police department other wise we will not get police officers like R.K Ravi, Jagdish and other who are sacrificed their life on duty. It is a big question mark and puzzle after all these incidents in Dakshina Kannada The Government still playing its dirty politics instead trying to bring back harmony in the district.

Good that all Police staff showed unity.because tomorrow same Situation can come to them too.It is such a bad political pressure having on official Govt dept.is ashaming. On the other side Police too are self responsible for taking Money and making the cases let down. They should be now unite together and receive no Money or any other type of Mamool, and Show no mercy towards the criminals.Only then our Country will improve.

It seems more than 60% chaddis are in khaki dept. Come on this is a wakeup call to all the minorities and secular minded peoples. Now this is a situation where the saffron cancer is diagnosed in DK police dept. My suggestion to all the minorities, please Try to join police force rather than looking for gulf countries.

I request not to comment something which you carry no personal knowledge of the incident just to please the other community.

Any cases can be filed against anybody as we often see it when it comes related to communal issue. One cannot call a victim as criminal until it gets proved in court. Hence better not to talk something based on your assumption. If you insult a victim later who turn innocent by court then you will surely be answerable to Allah on the day of judgement which as Muslim you cannot deny it.

Grow up and leave community aside. Stop bringing in community between everything.

I have known CI Pramod for 10 years now and he is one of the most honest and sincere cops I have come across. He never looks at community/background.

I agree with you brother. but the pressure from top level must not be consider or no interruption in any case could speedup the judgement like Arab countries. What is the solution for it. The police did cannot be justified. For better solution all good peoples in all party & all community should stand under one roof with unity which may be against for our community. These peoples should discuss all good and bad things boldly give open statements what is wrong what is right. It may cause to do the others to think out of emotion

Why you are saying that? Police are not human beings? They too have blood and flesh like us. They too have right to protest against injustice. Let the media find out who are those DK politicians responsible for Circle Inspectors suspension? They are not fit to be called peoples representatives as they tried to help criminal and punish the police. We don't want such politicians. Congress anyways is a sinking ship. It's days are numbered. Earlier Tipu Jayanthi now Abubakkar Siddiq Jayanthi. Nidderamayya still in deep sleep. There is talk going on that local politicians trying to protect thieves who stole from a church in Fajir. So, people need to be very careful and honest police personnel should be extra careful.

If things go like this,I am sure that good days are ahead for Mangalore. The incident is a lesson and clear warning to all those police higher ups who are dancing to the tune of their political boss and treat police as tool. With this I also feel that morale of police in town has increased. They need not bother or fear for troublesome transfers for political reasons if they are right and people will come to their rescue and take care of them.
People remember the political leaders who use police as their tool do not belong to any particular party and they are in every party and in Mangalore all such leaders have done this act. This time they have failed.
Complements to CI Pramod sir for gaining the confidence of people which even god almighty loves those who serve people with heart.
If my memory is correct CI Pramod sir was earlier was in charge of Bajpe stn and transferred due to political leaders pressure for parading a rowdy sheeter in the town with hands cuffed.
Nice happy ending of the issue.Ultimately people are masters....
