Udupi, Dec 9: A girl who lost her parents at a young age and who was being constantly tortured from the past several years by her aunt was rescued at Salikeri, Brahmavar here on Tuesday December 8.

The girl Nitya (name changed) lost her parents when she was just 7 years old, and since then was living with her aunt Girija. It is alleged that ever since the girl came to live with her, Girija constantly harassed and tortured her physically.

It is also alleged that recently, Girija sprayed chilli powder into Nitya's eyes just because she went to her friend's house.

Nitya is now 17, but already her aunt has decided to marry her off, sources said. Worried over this, the girl took the help of her neighbours and contacted Srishtidhama and human rights activists.

When the officials, locals and rescue volunteers came to Girija's house and questioned her about the allegations of torture, the youths in her house reportedly abused them and even came forward to assault them.

The girl was eventually rescued with the help of the police. She was taken to Srishtidhama for rehabilitation, and it is learnt that Srishtidhama has assured the police of taking full responsibility of the girl.

However, as no one came forward to file a complaint, the police said that they have not registered any case.
