Udupi: 23-year-old woman dies in accident at Santhekatte

Udupi, Dec 12: A young woman was killed in an accident at Santhekatte here on Saturday December 12.

The deceased has been identified as Pavitra Achar (23), a resident of Havanje.

It is learnt that Pavitra was riding pilion with her brother Pradeep when their bike collided head-on with a crane near Santhekatte market. The crane was moving from Udupi towards Kundapur.

Pavitra who was critically injured was rushed to hospital, but breathed her last on the way, sources said. Her brother Pradeep sustained injuries and is recuperating in a hospital.

Pavitra was the daughter of Vadiraja Acharya and has a twin sister who works in Mangaluru.

She was working in Manipal and was on her way to work when the accident took place.

The condition of the road at Santhekatte has been blamed for the accident. Due to road repair, vehicles have been moving in a single line, rendering the stretch congested. It is also learnt that at the same spot, another commuter lost his life in an accident on the night of Friday December 11.

Udupi traffic police have registered a case.

    A FLYOVER BRIDGE is must for santhekatte junction, there is no speed limit on highway buses lorries going on such a high speed ,sunday is being santhe a huge crowed will be there.
    shameless politicians are busy with parishath elections,poor people have to give their life to roads.

    Crossing the road at Santhekatte junction is very dangerous as well as very scary too. Vehicles are moving in and out, i don't know, may be from around 10 to 15 directions. Don't know when this work will get over. To add to the woes, Fish market,Sunday market, Vegetable market, all grouped at that same place.Very sad to hear about Pavitra. May her soul rest in peace.

    Very painful because we continue to disregard safety issue of wearing helmets( even pillion riders need to wear - no rule is required basic common sense).
    Ultimately it is we who pay the price with our lives.

    2 wheeler riding is very dangerous and both the occupants MUST wear Helmets( tightly fastened) for our safety.

    Mr. Jossy Saldhana, Mumbai: The DC Mr A.B. Ibrahim, is the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada District and not of Udupi District, as Santhakatte falls withing the jurisdiction of Udupi District. Also Mr. Anamali is the SP of Udupi District and Dr. Sharanappa is the SP of DK District. So the DC Mr. Ibrahim has no jurisdiction over Udupi District.

    Intersection at Kallianpur Santhekatte is most Dangerous for all kinds of travelers as well as people crossing over. The Police Dept, Govt Officials & Collector are careless& irresponsible. Safety is at the lowest level.

    Even if traffic lights are installed, the bike riders are bound to ignore them. This mishap could be involuntary manslaughter in a few countries, because known the road under construction, single lane traffic movement, the impatient bike rider deliberately crossed over to the other lane (oncoming traffic) and must have rammed the crane head on and the pillion rider must have been tossed over the rider on to the crane. We have scant respect for road signs, construction in progress sings and I wonder if learning road signs is part of licensing process!! Now we blame the ‘road condition’ for the accident.

    Why traffic police are not bothered if the pillion rider doesn't wear helmet, can someone tell me. In fact most of the time pillion rider is injured more than the driver. Reason for this is that the pillion rider does not have anything to hold on to like a handle. Hence pillion rider is at a higher risk. Nowhere in the world pillion riders are allowed without helmet except India

    A painful incident. Our heartfelt condolences to parents Mr. and Mrs. Vadiraja Achar.

    Count all the two wheeler accidents on the roads of Kanara Districts. More of these deaths are due to a pillion attached to the two wheelers and majority deaths are of younger generation. These pillions are for stunt ride along the privately owned roads, not for crowded National highways.

    Please ban these pillion rides. Let our youth live long life...

    This is the result of lack of intellect and ideocracy. The engineers and contractors who is responsible for the quality constructions are mostly fall in this category. What do our 'common man' do, is busy fighting/killing for the sake of religion.
