Mangaluru, Dec 14: Spandana Trust organized a self help group convention at Infant Mary’s School grounds here on December 13.
The convention began at St Joseph’s School premises Kankanady by releasing the flag of Spandana Trust by the chief guest, Jacintha Vijaya Alfred honorable mayor of Mangaluru city corporation. She said that self help groups are very important instruments in modifying and motivating families towards all-round upliftment. The procession of women reached Infant Mary’s School grounds for the formal programmes.

Member of the legislative assembly J R Lobo was the inaugurator of the programme. In his speech he mentioned that the uniformed women present in a large number shows group unity and strength with the same motive and work. He also felt that women are stronger than men in raising the family. Sisters of Charity are doing a great missionary work in dealing with the poor which is helpful in improving the family situation.
Jyothi P S lecturer of Mangaluru University gave the keynote address. With a story of a person using two axes. One axe was broken and discarded. The conversation between two shows how one can sharpen one’s life and offer his/her services to others. In the same way storing not just money but also knowledge and psychological thoughts and attitudes are useful for one’s life and a help to others. Hence, self help groups are helpful in improving the social, economic, political life of the members and others.
Guest Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu vicar general of Mangaluru diocese in his speech explained the work of missionaries whose intentions were to help people live as human beings by opening schools and bring them to light from darkness. When Jesus Christ lived on earth he showed the path of love, truth and justice.
The president Sr Matilda Monteiro, provincial superior, sisters of Charity of Mangaluru province highlighted the importance of self help groups, their unity and strength. Only by joining together it is possible to change the surrounding situation.
The report of 2014 – 2015 was presented by Theertha, social worker of Spandana Trust. Sr Evangeline the administrator of the Trust welcomed the gathering. Vote of thanks was extended by Harini, the president of the self help group federation.
Around 4,000 SHG members were present. The social workers and the animators of the trust co-operated in the programme. Victor Vas co-ordinator of the trust was the chief person at the show.
