Udupi: Congress has rewarded my work with expulsion: J P Hegde

Udupi, Dec 15: A day after he was expelled from Congress for six years for contesting as a rebel candidate in the upcoming MLC elections, a visibly hurt former MP Jayaprakash Hegde convened a press meet to respond to the party's move.

"I have called this press meet to explain myself and respond to certain claims and allegations by Congress leaders, as I do not want people to think that whatever being said by the leaders is correct just because I am silent," he said.

"I have won twice in Brahmavar and once from Kundapur, and also on the request of MLC Pratapchandra Shetty, I had stood for Lok Sabha by-elections from Udupi-Chikkamagaluru constituency. When no one from the party was ready to contest the MP by-election, I came forward and won too. During my work as MP, I got good response from the people and party workers of Udupi and Chikkamagaluru," he said.

"But now the Congress leaders have forgotten the development I brought to the constituency as well as the work I did for Congress. Even when I was in JD(S), I supported Congress. I did not expect anything from the party, but now I am being rewarded with expulsion," he added.

"Pratapchandra Shetty never canvassed during elections. He had been saying from the past six years that he did not want to contest, and only because of that we wanted to fill the void that he would create. That is why we (independent candidates) filed our nominations. If Congress had chosen anyone else in place of Pratapchandra, we would have supported that candidate.

"We had brought the matter to the attention of party leaders many times. The candidate chosen should have been one who has worked at the gram panchayat level and attended meetings regularly," J PHegde said.

"Even after I lost the last Lok Sabha elections, I worked for Udupi and Chikkamagalur, and party workers have continued their support to me. The party has been built in various ways. I did not go to any other party despite losing the election," he added.

Stating that party leaders should avoid personal attacks, he said, "MLA Gopal Poojary and minister Vinay Kumar Sorake are making a lot of statements on the matter, but they should keep me out of their debates."

"Had I not strived hard during my tenure as minister, Udupi would have remained a taluk. I still remember my experience as in-charge of the undivided Dakshina Kannada district and I also cherish the experience of winning from Brahmavar. People have seen my work and I will continue the same. The party has not taken any action against those who are inactive, but I have been expelled despite the work I have done. How far is that right?" he questioned.

Responding to allegations that he was hungry for power, J P Hegde said, "I do not want power. It is fine if I do not get any position. I am someone who had given up power. What is important is the work you do and not the position you hold."

Asked if his association with Congress had ended, he said, "I may have stood for the MLC elections as independent or rebel candidate, but it does not mean my association with Congress will end. It will continue despite the expulsion."

"Leaders should not consider themselves as superior. Gopal Poojary has claimed that he has talked to party workers and members about deciding on the MLC candidate, but he did not. When Blasius D'Souza and Pratapchandra Shetty had stood for MLC elections in 2003, I had supported them independently even though I was not in Congress, and they had won. But now they forgotten all that.

"Congress should take everyone together, or people will give a fitting reply," he added.

Asked to predict the MLC election result, he said he was confident of being ahead.

Congress leader Bhujanga Shetty, who withdrew his nomination after J P Hegde filed his, said, "I took back my nomination in support of J P Hegde as promised. I Congress thinks I am doing anything wrong, it can expel me too. I am ready to face any consequence."

Rahmatulla, Godwin Menezes and others were present.

JK Udupi, I had high respect for JPH! He lost it all!! May be he has done better than most MP/MLA's in the last decade! Not respecting party is his weakness! Pl remember he lost MP seat due to Modi wave! He could have waited for his own wave in the next election since he had peoples back up! Now even if he wins MLC my personal opinion is, he is a loser! I wish he will win! But he has put wrong foot being an Ex-MP! He is still young! He needs to have patience! He proved he is not persistent! Needs quick result! principles are like a light house! He got opportunity...and floored it! Long term might prove costly for his quick staircase!!!! Again...he may win this election being a loser! In the new party too he will do the same as habit die hard!

JP hegde wanted this MLC seat badlyIf he had genuinely cared for congress workers, he should not have proposed their name and not his name. He has lost the battle here for ego and power, next option for him is to contest for jilla parishad elections. He will soon become another dhananjaya kumar of congress, all the best

Congress Party has given JPH enough chance to contest the MP, MLA elections and Mr.Prathap Chandra Shetty was recomended JPH name for the Congress ticket. But now he is blaming Prathap. BJP has given the ticket to sitting MLC Kota Poojary and in the same way Congress given the ticket to their sitting MLC Prathap Chandra, what is wrong in it? If JPH lost this MLC election, he will contest for Taluk Panchayath & Jilla Panchayath election also. Such a power hungry person will become one more Vasantha Salian.

No doubt JPH is a good social worker and people's leader.
But he accusing INC suspended him as a reward for his past work is in poor light, not truth!
Definitely INC fielded him as MP candidate and he won.
He insisted on the same this time again, but INC sought to give seat to other aspiring candidate as well, he defied the party whip and contested as independent, thereby not remained loyal to party, therefore this expulsion!

You can do social work even if you are not in a position.

There are many congress men who were in congress before you jumped in to congress and after your arrival to congress also have worked for the people. So they also should be given a chance.

Kindly stay in social work and refrain from anti congress activities.

I respect JP sir and he is the gem against our present useless MP. but fact of the matter is congress has given him opportunities for MLA and MP elections and he won only MP bi election, he should have remained in Party and I am sure he was been respected by party leaders and should have contested next MP election by doing further ground works. there are able candidates and I am standby JP sir's stand of withdrawing nomination if they have given opportunity to Gafoor or Veronica.

Now the situation is like What is Halady Srinivas Shetty to BJP, that is JPH to Congress. The only difference is the former one left the party with the support of his people while the later one was expelled...with the support of his people. Am not sure if BJP will try to bring in JPH to the perty or he may join, but for sure Congress will try its best to rope in Halady to win Kundapur atleast in the next elections.

the two personalities, halady srinivas shetty and jph has potential to win by thier own names.it is no secret that jph lost many elections contesting from congress bcoz of congress party tag.by contesting as independent,he has more chance to win in mla election

halady has aversion to congress the same way jph has aversion to bjp.so prospects of these two persons joining opposite parties looks slim.but halady has shown bjp of what loss they have endured upon themselves by throwing him out of party in udupi district.bjp can never recover from that halady episode.they have lost udupi district forever by unceremoniously throwing halady out.even shoba karandlaje admitted that she won mainly bcoz of halady support more than the modi wave.this jph is also similar force like halady.he may or may not win this election but he has more chance of winning mla election if he contests in any other constituency in udupi other than contesting in kundapur against halady.
