Mangaluru: Under aircraft seat, in mobile phones: Gold seized in four cases at airport

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Dec 15: The officers of customs at Mangaluru International Airport have seized 824 grams of gold worth Rs 21.22 lac in four separate cases in the last few days.

In the first case, gold in the form of thin strips and one gold coin were found concealed in the waist part and pockets of the denim trousers carried by a passenger.

In another case, while rummaging an aircraft, two gold bars were found concealed under the seat cushion. The gold bars, left behind in the aircraft by a passenger who came from Dubai, were attempted to be retrieved by his accomplice on the aircraft's immediate departure to Mumbai in the domestic sector. Both the passengers were apprehended.

In the third case, two gold bars were found modified to fit into the battery slot and concealed inside mobile phones carried by a passenger.

In the fourth case, two gold bars were recovered from a lady passenger who had concealed them on her person.

The identities of the accused passengers in the above four cases have not been revealed.

In a press note, customs commissioner Dr M Subramaniyam said, "As the smugglers are changing (their) modus operandi as and when detections are made, customs officers are keeping a strict vigil on such suspicious passengers and their baggage are subjected to a detailed examination to thwart any attempt to smuggle gold and prohibited goods."

Further investigations are in progress.

These have differnet ways to smuggle gold into India. Customs also make money and the smugglers. Better use this money for a good cause and not to build ISIS net work.

There is another method of cheating the govt. A certain amount of gold can be brought to India after paying the duty. So many people and keep the biscuits on the table, but the Custom officers tell them to hide and pay half of the duty amount to a certain person. Once that certain person signals, the passenger is cleared with his concealed gold. That also is risky, but govt people show the way.

This is the height of madness. No where in the world gold is a smugglers choice except India.
All because of useless foreign policies.
The government should lift all rules on imports so that there will be more foreign revenue.
All you have to do is check and control export of foreign currency .

I THINK ITS EASY TO SMUGGLE. WHEN INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT ARRIVES AT MANGALORE. SAME FLIGHT GOES TO MUMBAI OR BANGALORE.

OTHER PERSON BOOKS ON THE SAME SEAT FROM MANGALORE TO MUMBAI. WHERE THE GOLD IS HIDDEN UNDERNEATH THE SEAT.

THEN ON DOMESTIC FLIGHT. NO BODY CHECKS ON EXIT.

Great idea man .. But I think this is / may be an old / out-dated idea for the customs authorities. Give them some new interesting riddles which they will like to solve and make them even more smarter to crack.
