Air India staffer sucked by aircraft engine, dead

Mumbai, Dec 16 (HT): An Air India technician died after being sucked into an aircraft engine parked at the Mumbai airport on Wednesday.

A live tracker showed the status of the flight (AI619), scheduled to travel from Mumbai to Hyderabad, as delayed by more than an hour. The incident happened when the jet was being pushed back for departure.

"An Air India technician died in a mishap during pushback of flight AI 619; the incident is being investigated," Air India CMD Ashwani Lohani said. "We are deeply saddened and regret the tragic incident at Mumbai airport," he added.

"The body is still stuck in the engine, efforts are going on to retrieve it," an airport official said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak on the matter.

An Air India source said a probe has been ordered into the incident. "At the moment, we are absolutely clueless on how this person was near the aircraft. Only an inquiry can establish whose negligence it was and whether the engine should have been switched on at that time," the official said.

    Very Sad Incident.
    In India, on the job training and safety requirements/ training is lacking. If officials don't know the importance of Safety on job requirements what the poor workers, so called engineers will do.

    Anything is possible in India and especially in Bombay Airport I saw none of the Airport staff in Bombay Airport are attentive or helpful. From Coolie to 3 star officers are expert in stealing from passengers luggage.

    @Amigo agree with you.I would like to add few bad practices which is ongoing and the authorities least bothered.
    Busy airports like Mumbai lack of safety awareness and practices. Safety means prevention of accident.
    If you look at the speed baggage carts moving around aircraft and the passenger buses moving near the tarmac at speed definitely a threat.
    Most of us take safety as granted.We use shortcuts in many ways.
    Nevr use proper tools for repairs,never wear personal protective equipments,not remain attentive,underestimate potential hazard at workplace,we never communicate to address the issue.
    Everyone is rushing,no value for human life.
    Days are very near where our airport will become like VT railway terminal.
    Feel sorry for the loss of life.
    Let them investigate who gave the clearance to pilot to thrust on the engine when the crew is nearby.
    Similar incident happened in Texas US in 1995.

    Can't understand how this can happen. The main engines of the aircraft put on/given more speed only after the push back vehicle moved away from the aircraft, what for the technician came there and got sucked by the engine? Looks like this type of accidents can happen only in India!

    I wonder from the statement "we are absolutely clueless on how this person was near the aircraft" !!! This is the era of CCTV worldwide n almost all important premises covered by this technology but is it not in the one of the worlds largest airport??? Inquiry must be done n if someone's negligence other than the victim's himself,must be booked.

    One of the largest? My foot.
    Do you know this airport has just one runway, while the other smaller runway crisscrossing the other?
    Large airports should have at least 3 independent runways.
    Largest airport in Atlanta has 6 independent runways, Schipol in Amsterdam has 7 runways all independent.

    When he said 'pne of the largest' he meant by traffic, passengers and service and not in terms of area and length of runways. Indeed Mumbai is one of the largest airports in a small built up area just so that people residing near the airports do not need to get displaced due to its expansion.

    This is a rare accident in the history of commercial air-crafts. May be negligence on the part of the member of the staff of Air India that may have caused this unfortunate event.
