Mangaluru, Dec 20: In a tragic incident, a college student drowned while swimming with his friends at Belvai Math pond in Moodbidri near here on the evening of Sunday December 20.
The deceased has been identified as Akash Rai (17), son of BJP leader Manjunath Rai, a resident of Muramelu, Kotebagilu in Moodbidri.
It is learnt that Akash along with his friends had been to the pond at the Belvali Math for a swim. He got washed away while swimming and despite rescue efforts by his friends, he could not be saved, sources said.
His body was shifted to Moodbidri government hospital.
As news spread, hundreds of BJP workers arrived at the hospital to express condolences.
Akash was a first year BCom student of Mahaveer College.
Moodbidri police have registered a case.
