Mangaluru: NITK toll plaza is reality now- Charges specified

Daijiworld Media Network-Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Dec 22: Since there were several objections from the general public for the functioning of the toll plaza near NITK in Suratkal on the national highway 66, nobody thought it would be realty this year. But now the toll plaza has become a reality with effect from December 21. National highway authority has already started imposing the toll charges on the commuters between Udupi and Mangaluru.

On Monday and Tuesday morning, vehicle drivers could be seen checking the toll charges and paying them at the plaza. For some it was a total surprise.

Vehicles traveling between Suratkal to Nanthoor (18.362 kilometers) will have to cough up money to use the highway. Ircon was the contractor of the road and the road construction was done with an outlay of Rs 363 crore. Once the spent amount is recovered, the toll fee will come down by 40 % said sources.

Presently school buses, vehicles of the president of India, prime minister of India, legislators and some government officers including the chief secretary are exempted from paying toll charges. But the toll collectors can offer concessions at their discretion.

Toll charges

For light passenger vehicles, one has to pay Rs 45 for one way and Rs 70 for two ways (to return on same day) and for the vehicle registered within the district Rs 25 will be charged. One can get 50 appearance pass for Rs 1,510 also (for one month)

For light goods vehicles, Rs 75 one way, Rs 110 two ways (to return on same day) and for the vehicle registered within the district Rs 35 will be charged. One can get 50 appearance pass for Rs 2435 also. (for one month).

For bus and trucks (two axle), Rs 155 one way, Rs 230 two ways (to return on same day) and for the vehicle registered within the district Rs 75 will be charged. One can get 50 appearance pass for Rs 5105. (for one month).

For three axle trucks , Rs 165 one way, Rs 250 two ways (to return on same day) and for the vehicle registered within the district Rs 85 will be charged. One can get 50 appearance pass for Rs 5565. (for one month).

For multi axle trucks and other classified heavy vehicles in the category, Rs 240 one way, Rs 360 two ways (to return on same day) and for the vehicle registered within the district Rs 120 will be charged. One can get 50 appearance pass for Rs 8000. (for one month).

For oversized and multi axle vehicles (more than 7 axles), Rs 290 one way, Rs 440 two ways (to return on same day) and for the vehicle registered within the district Rs 145 will be charged. One can get 50 appearance pass for Rs 9740. (for one month).

For passenger vehicles (other than commercial) which are stationed within 20 kilometers of the plaza a monthly pass for Rs 230 will be issued. Some other discounts depending upon the frequency will also be offered like a vehicle which travels 50 times in a month after paying the charges will get 33% discount.

10 times the specified charges will be collected from the vehicles that have carried more weight than the allowed weight. Even after paying the charges, excess weight will be emptied from the vehicle.

This toll gate will function here till a toll collection gate at Hejamady becomes functional. Then fees will change or a different module will be introduced, said sources at the NITK plaza.

Now many opinions, comments are being aired through this column. But in reality is this what you call as reality/toll gate collection is fair or justified?.According to my opinion as long as road work is not completed and required facilities are not provided how come this NHA authorities can collect the toll? What is the thesis or logic behind of collecting the toll unethically.Once the complete road work is finished and required facilities are provided, then NHA authorities can genuinely collect the toll and that is bound to.Because they have spent on it.Now they can not, even if they collect now,it is arbiter and unscientific.Let the NHA authorities apply their mind and think over the issue. This is really a burden on poor people.Besides, the place where plaza was built is not at all comfortable and convenient and it will give away the way for building of heavy traffic jam in front of the NITK.Where the people,MLAs,Ministers who have protested against the issue have gone now. They are keeping silent now. Why?The protest they organized few days back was just a show and stunt. This is my earnest request with NHA authorities to remove this plaza and stop collecting toll until the work on road is completely done.Don't be like Mohammed Bin Tuglak.

absolutely. if you see the condition of the NH at this place and around... so pathetic. bykampady has become a mess. if you see the new bridge getting handed over... it's a slap on us. It's a shame on us. of course those authorities doesn't have any shame. but I myself feel ashamed that at this ear when countries are talking about so modernized bridges, hanging bridges and all... we created... such a scrap quality bridge... looks 50 % work is left uncompleted.... so many places left with unscientific diversions, broken roads... etc etc... I don't know how this Toll came up and more over, allowed legally also ? Surprising and shocking...

unscientific single lane flyovers at Surathkal, Kottara and Kulur.Half constructed roads like Baikampady.which ever road is completed is not in a condition upto the "toll collection" mark. Most of the road surface are uneven. Near Panambur railway cross there are potholes and people have to pay toll for this.. great!! Even road connecting from Kottara to kuloor or Kuloor to kottara are very narrow and horrible (below fly over). Sorry to see this but common man cant do much about it , just live with it.

"Wise people" of DK are taken for ride yet again. Forget smart city, unfortunately we are heading for a Dumb city :(

Once Hejamady Toll Plaza operational, people can drive through my village via Padubidri to Belman to Mundkur to Moorukaveri to Kateel and proceed further to Mangalore via Bajpe!!!! Remember we may put small gate in Mundkur to collect “Leisure Drive Tax” because Manchester City was developed by British on seeing the village Mundkur. (Any objection by anyone???? Objection Note can be written affixing Rs 300/- worth gift voucher)

Mr. Shetty, It's a long root. Better to drive via Pakshikere. No toll gate, but there will be gates of St. Judes Shrine, Sri Durgaparameshwari etc. Free blessings assured.
