Mangaluru: Case filed against Bajrang Dal for stopping 'Dilwale' screening

Mangaluru: Police security for screening of 'Dilwale' in theatres

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Updated

Mangaluru, Dec 22: After a group of Bajrang Dal activists forcibly stopped the screening of 'Dilwale' starring Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, the police department on Tuesday December 22 decided to provide security to the theatres screening the movie.

The Bajrang Dal activists, in protest against comments on intolerance made by Shah Rukh Khan last month, on Sunday December 20 had barged into the malls in the city and stopped the screening of the movie. They had also allegedly warned the theatre managements against screening any movie starring Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan.

The theatres, namely Cinepolis at City Centre, PVR at Forum Fiza Mall and Big Cinemas at Bharat Mall had suspended the screening of 'Dilwale' following the incident.

Thereafter, the Citizens' Forum for Mangalore Development led by Vidya Dinker filed a complaint against the Bajrang Dal and a case was registered.

On Tuesday December 22, the police held a meeting with the managements of theatres screening the movie after which it was decided to provide security to the theatres so that the movie shows could resume.

In a press note, the police also said that action would be taken against those who had protested against the screening of the movie on Monday December 21.

Mangaluru: Case filed against Bajrang Dal for stopping 'Dilwale' screening

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Dec 22: A case has been filed in Pandeshwar police station here against Bajrang Dal and others for forcibly stopping the screening of Shah Rukh Khan starrer 'Dilwale' in various theatres of the city on December 20. Bajrang Dal state convenor Sharan Pumpwell has also been named in the complaint.

The case has been registered based on the memorandum submitted by Vidya Dinker coordinator for Citizens' Forum for Mangalore Development. The memorundam was submitted to the commissioner of police S Murugan on Monday, December 21.

Activists of Bajrang Dal on Sunday December 20 raided theatres in the city and stopped the screening of latest movie 'Dilwale' directed by Rohit Shetty. The Bajrang Dal activists conducted the raids in protest against Shah Rukh Khan's statement on 'intolerance' . The raid follows a string of protests by VHP, Bajrang Dal and other right-wing outfits throughout the country against the Bollywood superstar.

Vidya Dinker speaking to daijiworld said, "We submitted a memorandum to the commissioner of police. We were unhappy to note that there were people trying to dictate what movie we should watch and what we should not. So we sought police intervention in this matter. This kind of immoral policing incidents are increasing these days. Even earlier we have raised our voice against incidents of immoral policing. This time also we met the police commissioner and asked him that to see the law of the land should prevail."

The memorandum states: "It is reported that rowdies belonging to Bajrang Dal attacked the three multiplexes in the city, namely PVR, Cinepolis and Big Cinemas, which had scheduled screenings of the film and tickets had also been sold for the same. It is reported that on Sunday Decmber 20, 2015, the gangs shouted abusively at the cinema outlets, trespassed into the premises and tore up posters of the film. Cinegoers were visibly distressed by the incident and the multiplex managements panicked and cancelled the subsequent shows. As of now, the movie’s screenings continue to be cancelled at the multiplxes and have not been revived by the managements due to security concerns.

"When one of the individual theatre owners sought police protection, he was allegedly told by police officials to run the show at his own risk. It is reported in the media that Bajrang Dal leader Sharan Pumpwell has openly accepted responsibility for the attack. He even attributed their motive as being to enforce boycott of Shah Rukh Khan’s films in retaliation against certain comments made by him regarding the issue of intolerance.

"We hereby wish to express our outrage over these affronts on our civil rights. Such incidences of immoral policing have been going on rampantly for the last few years. Citizens are being told what to do and what not to do by these goons and their anti-social outfits. These rowdies are holding civil society to ransom and citizens’ rights are being compromised.

"The police department has regrettably failed in reigning in these anti social elements. Even in this case, our enquiries with eye witnesses at the affected multiplexes have revealed that police contingent played the role of a silent bystander and made no attempt to intervene when Bajrang Dal goons tore up the movie posters right under their noses.

"We wish to place on record our strong protest against anti democratic and illegal attacks on civil society and citizens rights by various self styled extremist and religious fundamentalist outfits who are virtually ruling the city with intimidation and criminal tactics. This trend of unofficial censorship and moral policing is shameful, unfortunate and amounts to virtual murder of democracy.

"We also express our dismay on the futile role played by police during such incidences. It is always observed that the criminal elements have their way and police intervention is either non-existent, too late, too weak or totally ineffective. A parallel government is being established by these criminal syndicates and citizens are losing confidence in the police and official machinery," states the memorandum.

The Forum also placed the following demands:

- Provide security to all cinemas exhibiting 'Dilwale' Hindi film.
- Initiate enquiry and come out with an official statement on the issue and assure the public that it is safe to visit the cinemas.
- Take action against the guilty parties including their arrest and prosecution as applicable
- Take film exhibitors into confidence and ensure such incidents are not repeated. Assure them protection for immediate revival of screening of 'Dilwale'."

By stopping screening of a movie the actual loss is suffered by the producer and distributors who buy his films. Actors may just gain or lose popularity. They already get paid by the completion of their shooting assignments. this is like making one man suffer for another's misdeeds.

Two weeks ago, the Supreme court said that pollution was increasing in the country. Are bhakts and the Bajrang Dal going to boycott the Supreme Court also? Anna Hazare led an agitation in 2013 saying corruption was increasing in India (where many pro-BJP stars also participated). Are they anti-national too? Or is this outrage limited to only these 2 actors? When the BJP is in power, expressing any opinion on what's going wrong in my country will make me anti-national? By closing theaters forcibly, these lumpen elements have merely proved SRK right

If we go by the logic of the Bajrang Dal and Modi bhakts, then as Indian citizens, you should keep your mouth shut about anything that feel you going wrong in this country as long as Modi is in power. Perhaps this is more applicable to celebrities belonging to religious faiths they do not particularly like. So as long as Dear Leader is in power, talking about what's wrong in India, such as intolerance, corruption, pollution, etc, will "hurt national pride". Never mind that during UPA rule, the same people cried saying the country was going to the dogs due to corruption etc, but that for some reason, that did not affect "national pride".

So basically, under this government, only politicians are allowed to open their mouth. The rest of us automatically become "traitors" if we try and state our fears for our country. if this is what we have been reduced to under Modi rule, God bless all

These are happening due to lack of strict law. We condemn their behavior and demand to ban the organization as there is no security for the common people and business. Police officials responded to complaint of theater owner saying “Run the show at his own risk”??? That means, Police department is helpless OR inefficient !!!

FEKU has time for defend corruption accused Jootlee, but doesn’t have time to say a word against his Bhakts, who are disturbing/stopping movie viewers & troubling theater owners !!!

Bhakts tried their level best to spoil SRK & Dilwale name using social networking sites & ordered (or begged) their similar mentality people to avoid going Dilwale. But, all in vein, movie collected 121 crores (65 crores in India & 56 crores overseas) in just 3 days from movie release. The figures could have been even better, had multi-starrer movie 'Bajirao Mastani's not given tough competition!

Movie will run during Christmas & New Year holidays, which will add more to profit to SRK’s Red Chillis Productions. Movie budget was 90 crores & collection as on date already crossed 140 crores...!

These jobless & brainless Bhakts cannot stop SRK as he is internationally recognized star & enjoys educated & intelligent fan following. Just get ready for his next block busters in 2016 – “Fan” & “Raees”

SRK’s brilliant dialogue in Dilwale, exclusively for Bhakts(in case, by mistake they didn’t watch Dilwale!) – “Hum shareef kya huye, yeh duniya hi behimaan ho gayee”

Unnecessary provoking and causing restlessness by so called Stars They should know their limits.Just like useless politicians they make statements not having a clue about the repercussions. It is the common man who has to face the crisis afterwards .bundhs killings and what not. Then we have Buddhi jeevies like Canards adding fuel to fire. All which can be avoided. This does not matter to the stars but the whole country suffers because of them. This Dilwale Time Pass Kadle then does not cut much ice.Everybody then wants his ' pound of flesh' starting a dangerous trend. Therefore everyone should act responsibly at the outset.

I condemn your comment outright Mr. Bhandarkar. Excuse me, are you trying to tell the superstars which party they are suppose to choose and which one to oppose?
It has become a trend these days that if anyone is not happy with Modi Government as if he is anti national. If any X Y Z| is feeling that there is growing amount of intolerance under the present regime so be it. That's their inner voice and concern and they have utmost right to speak up on this. But these goonda's have no right to protest in a dictatorship fashion. As a legal course of retaliation, these citizens just have the right to oppose his statement and condemn it, nothing beyond that. I might criticize Mr. Siddaramiah's statements or Mr. Owaisi's statements tomorrow and i dare anyone to oppose my free speech is such fashion. These goons should be stoned in public view. Enough is Enough is Enough now!

Wilfred..don't act like a frog in the well. Each individual knows what to watch and what not to watch. So, please, nobody can tell me what to eat, what to see and what to do. As long as I am not doing any harm to society as I live in democratic India. You are staying in Dubai and you are allowed to eat pork as Dubai is tolerant nation. Many big supermarkets have pork and those who want pork can buy without asking anybody's permission. So, in India, these brainless goons create nuisance in society. These goons are black spot in the society.

My comment is not on this particular issue. Meanwhile i condemn the way they protested. There are many other polite ways to protest. Watevr we do here , it wont make any difference in shahrukhs financial aspect and reputation. But dint see anyone here condemning his comments on intolerance. Just 2 days prior to the movie release he showed his standards by giving a totaly different statement. With due respect to all religions i would like to ask u all about religious sentiments. In the movie PK had it been some other religion amir was defaming wat would have been your reactions? When it comes to religion all individuals have their own sentiments. But the screen heroes are least bothered. Their concern is how to break the box office records.

The problem is the system.. Unfortunately the police are paid peanuts by the government and they have to rely on corrupt payments to make a living.. Doesn't mean I endorse the ineffectiveness of the police and district administration. Only way out for the peace to prevail in Mangalore would be when all the citizens unitedly fight against this social evil.. If effectively utilized no power is stronger than Democracy.. But will someone start an uprising against these jobless evil power? Not sure...

I am an Indian, moreover a Hindu, & living in India. I also feel intolerance in the country. But I did not leave the country & I won't do also. I have been facing intolerance since my birth. Now, what do you answer me? However, Aamir khan told, Sharuk supported, you people stopped. No connection at all. Actually, Dilwale a film by Rohit Shetty, but not of SRK. If you want to oppose SRK, then are you able to stop "Kolkata Knight Rider" from playing IPL match? You can't stop it, because some of you are involved in the betting, what do you say?

Film Industry is the one of major revenue generating source for Govt & brainless people are creating problems for some movie screening for silly reasons. Simultaneously, it affects Govt revenue.

Some goons make damage to movie theatres, for showing movie against their order/wish(?). This will make movie producers/Theatre owners to approach Govt or Police department & ask for security during movie screening going forward & obviously, Govt cannot deny their demand as Govt is responsible if riots, damages takes place. Who’s money will be spent on theatre & movie goers security? Is it not tax payers money?

Do these things comes to mind of problem mongers?

If such things happened in Bangalore or GOA these goonda nowhere to be seen in future and immediately extricated from the city itself.
