Udupi, Dec 23: Thefts in the wedding halls in the Udupi area are on the rise. Two more incidents have been reported last week in two separate places of the district.

The first incident took place at Devadiga hall at Hiriadka on December 13. Jayashri from Bommarabettu was attending her sister’s wedding at that hall with her family. The handbag she kept in the dressing room was stolen from there. She had kept Rs 45,000 cash specifically to cover some expenses of the wedding. In addition to cash, she lost driving license, PAN card, voter’s ID, bank debit card and the RC of the bike belonging to her husband.

On the same day of the incident Rs 1,400 was withdrawn from her account using her bank debit card at Hebri Syndicate bank ATM. A case stands registered at Hiriadka police station on this theft.

The second incident took place at Govinda Kalyana Mantapa in Udupi on December 20. Srinivasa A Bhat from Kamalasile in Kundapur taluk has complained that he was attending a wedding of his close relative at the venue. He had kept the excess jewelry worn by his sister in the dressing room which was stolen. The jewelry stolen included 2 necklaces weighing 16 grams, pearl studded gold chain weighing 22 grams, 2 mobile phones and Rs 3,000 cash. The complaint stands registered at Udupi town police station.

It should be remembered that a couple was apprehended by police on Monday, December 21 at Hiriadka and it is said that the couple have admitted to stealing in many wedding halls. It is not yet conclusively known whether this couple has played any roles in these two thefts.
