NDA government may allow Kambala, Jallikattu soon

New Delhi, Dec 29 (DHNS): The NDA government is likely to lift restrictions on locally popular traditional sports such as Kambala and Jallikattu from new year but with conditions to protect animals against cruelty.

An announcement is likely to come on January 1 after Union Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar meets Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi for legal vetting of the decision since the matter is pending in the Supreme Court.

“Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu, bullock cart race in Maharashtra, Kambala in Karnataka and some sort of race using bullocks in Punjab have been traditionally and culturally practised for centuries. We want to respect that but also ensure that there should be no cruelty. Therefore, we will give you good news in the next couple of days,”Prakash Javadekar told reporters.

The minister said they have “found out some ways and will announce by January 1” since the government was “positive on the issue".

The restricted folk buffalo race largely takes place in slush fields of coastal Karanataka after the High Court in 2014 December stayed the ban imposed on Kambala by district administrations. The court had allowed the sport after imposing animal welfare ensuring conditions that were to be executed by organisers. The local sport associations, however, had urged the state Congress government to further relax restrictions.

The NDA government was under pressure, especially from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 22, the penultimate day of Parliament’s winter session, demanding that the Centre bring an ordinance to resume Jallikattu in the state so that it can take place during the Pongal festival next month.

This is not about animal welfare. People of a neighboring state are bent upon finishing off our culture. In the case of Kambala they argue that the buffaloes have a nose ring which is inhuman. Let me tell you that even dairy animals in the USA have nose rings to control them and also those used for ploughing here and all over the world do have them. It is clear show of their fascist mentality that they are after Kambala and not after horse racing and betting that continues to ruin thousands of families each year just like alcohol. Anyone who has watched derby and associated with horse racing will tell you. But if these pseudos raise a hue and cry about horse racing their bank accounts and donations are going to run dry. Everyone knows that raising Kambala buffaloes is a costly affair and each buffalo is treated like a prince with daily bath, oil massage, training, and sumptuous diet. Let us get together to protect our culture and ward off the evil designs of people of this neighboring state.

    Mahendra Shetty,

BJP is the party that houses Maneka Gandhi who is an animal protection activist voicing for protecting stray dogs despite knowing that the canines attacked people and ate up small children. She is the reason for the rise in monkey menace that trespassed into government buildings (in Delhi) and destroyed documents. Not forgetting the devastation the apes cause to vegetable/farm produce of poor farmers.

Why can't it be true that she is instrumental in stopping Kambala ? You are celebrating in irony - first straighten the animal lovers in your party !

    Mahendra Shetty,

As you feel celebrating Naaturam Godse's anniversary is right, others feel Tipu Sultan is more a patriot. Nevertheless, both are dead, make no difference to the life of the living.

But the monkey / stray dog menace is not about the dead but an ordeal everyday a man endures.
