Udupi, Dec 29: The Udupi district police have recovered stolen cash and valuables worth Rs 49,21,765 during the year 2015, between January 1 and December 28. Altogether, valuables worth over Rs 2.24 crore were stolen across the district during the same period, putting the recovery percentage at 22 percent.

The details of thefts and valuables recovered during the year in Udupi district were disclosed in a press meet at the DAR premises here on Tuesday December 29.

In Udupi sub-divisional limits, .the police recovered 11 stolen pumps, a lorry, a car, 28 mobile phones, five motorcycles, five laptops, 4,000 sculptures, seven gold ornaments totally weighing 61 grams, and Rs 2,22,000 in cash, altogether worth Rs 29,42,230.

In Karkala sub-divisional limits, 26 grams of stolen gold, an LED TV, areca worth Rs 2 lac, a bronze vessel, two ancient idols, two motor pumps, 11 motorcycles, a CCTV camera, 15 cows, 400 metres of cable wire, and Rs 75,000 in cash, totally worth Rs 11,78,635 were recovered from accused in various thefts. The idols were found in the possession of a certain Padmavati and Srinivas, who were trying to sell them off, police said.

The valuables recovered in Kundapur sub-divisional limits included four quintals of cashewnuts, two Sony handycams, 29 sacks of areca, electronic items worth Rs 3 lac, a gold chain and Rs 3,400 in cash, altogether worth Rs 8,00,900.

Out of the Rs 49,21,765 worth of stolen valuables recovered, valuables worth Rs 16,83,630 have been handed over to the rightful owners. Altogether, valuables worth Rs 2,24,57,112 were stolen during the year.
