Beltangady assault case - 3 released, allege torture in custody, admitted to hospital

Mangaluru, Dec 30: Three persons of a family who were allegedly assaulted by SI Sandesh and other cops have been admitted to hospital after they were released from custody late evening on Tuesday December 30. They sustained bruises due to alleged atrocity by the cops while they were in custody.

Kiran Walter and his family including women, along with a nun and a child were allegedly assaulted by the cops led by SI Sandesh, who had interrupted Kiran's brother's wedding on Monday December 28 night in a bid to arrest Kiran in connection to a fraud case. The SI in a counter case alleged that when he went to arrest Kiran, he and his family members assaulted him and other policemen.

Kiran Walter (38), Elias (40), Rupesh (29) and Godwin (20) had been arrested by SI Sandesh. Among them, Kiran was produced in court and sent to judicial custody, while the other three were released and admitted to hospital.

Sources said that Elias, Rupesh and Godwin had to be taken to hospital after they were allegedly assaulted in custody. The three of them, who had swollen body parts and bleeding wounds, said they were brutally tortured by the cops on Tuesday in Beltangady police station.

They also said that they had been warned by Beltangady circle police inspector Lingappa B R, at the time of letting them go, to directly reach their homes. They claimed that they were warned of dire consequences if they failed to obey this instruction, and had also been strictly told not to speak to the media.

A person named Anil Furtado had complained that Kiran had collected Rs 5.10 lac from him with the promise of bagging employment for the latter's wife at Israel, but cheated him by not keeping the promise and not returning the money either. It was in this connection that SI Sandesh had interrupted Kiran's brother's wedding function on Monday night and arrested him along with the others.

After representatives met SP Sharanappa on Tuesday and discussed the issue, cases lodged under various sections were changed and only section 353 was enforced against Kiran. Others were beaten up, put through rollers etc since Monday night to Tuesday afternoon, sources said.

"It is a financial dispute between two families. We are not against police investigation like questioning etc. But torture was wrong. After going home, these people suffered from body pain, headache etc and therefore came here in spite of death threat from police inspector," said Stany Alvares, who has been following the case.

"We are disappointed with the stand taken by MLA Vasanth Bangera, who said SI Sandesh was a gentleman. But Sandesh was suspended twice earlier. He tore his own clothes to escape from the charge that he had manhandled a nun. They themselves put together people to show that he is popular in the region," he claimed.

"All legal formalities are being met today. Mostly, Kiran Walter will be released on bail on Wednesday. A delegation will meet SP again today to put forth all the facts and seek action. Although we feel all of them are innocent, we are not opposed to civilized inquiry," Stany Alvares said.

Do you know that this SI was caught red-handed by Lokayukta a few years ago while accepting bribe. It looks like this guy is buying lot of land around D. Kannada and registering under different names. There should be an enquiry, how this SI, with his salary, can buy so much land. Or is he just using brute force to grab the land?

If this is not torture, then what else can define torture. What law do our Police apply while torturing people in police custody? There should be provision to take such police to court on human rights violation. Injustice to one is injustice to all.

    Amith,

His religion is irrelevant. Do you remember a Hindu organization sacked a Swamy for his lose tongue ? Did anybody spare him ? He was rightly demanded to be sent to Kerala, thats where came from !

Similarly, send SI Sandhesh to where he belongs ! Christianity is applicable inside the Church, not while he is a public servant ! That too definitely not when he abuses a nun !

Yes, a nun - again not because he is a Christian that he should respect a nun but because nuns are in nature equivalent to widows, so lowly and humble ! No sane person will misbehave with them ! And here, of all people, a Police Officer forgets his respect and duty towards women ? Why he may not have been drunk ?

To top it all, torture in police custody is publicly displayed. How many more counts are required to get this officer be shown his place ?

We have lost conscience . This is a family of priests and nuns. The only family in whole of Belthangady parish to have so many Religious priests and nuns. The youngsters you see in the picture came as guests for the wedding. what the college going students have to do with police case? If good samaritans like Mr.Lobo and stany Alvares are not there then God only have to save our families from this kind of wrong publicity and torture. Why our own community people are commenting like this? let us get together and help the Innocent at least during this Christmas time.

    James,

You may be right, if you know the family personally. However, a most pious family can also sometimes have one bad apple but that does not seem to be the possibility here because someone staying abroad, does not fiddle with legal mess because then he may have to deposit his Passport, curtailing his path back to his work.

This point alone has kept me believing that some bad game is being played here and the SI is very much the culprit in making it more messy.

SI needs to be dismissed from service for human rights violations, atrocities committed on children under protection of child rights and Child Welfare Act and molestation of women and nun by tearing there dress and attires. A serious view should be taken against him by higher ups and he should be summarily dismissed from service.

This is the real fate of the common people and the photo shows the brutality. If the financial dispute is between the two, police should have investigated fairly and not torturing every one of the family. If all the trouble makers in the name of party and religion would have treated by police like above without bias, Mangaluru would have been peaceful.
This clearly shows that our so called democratic system is full of bias, politically motivated and for the influentials only. We common people are to blame for not waken up still.
