Karnataka legislative council polls: Congress bags 13 seats, BJP 6

Bengaluru, Dec 30 (IANS): The ruling Congress won 13 of the 25 Karnataka legislative council seats for which elections were held, leaving opposition BJP and JD-S behind with six and four seats, an election commission official said on Wednesday.

"Congress has won 13 constituencies, BJP six, JD-S four and independents in two of the 25 legislative council seats where the biennial polling was held on December 27," Karnataka chief electoral officer A.K Jha told IANS here.

The Congress won in Bangalore Rural and Bangalore Urban, Bidar, Bellary, Bijapur-II, Chitradurga, Dakshina Kannada-II, Dharwad-I, Hassan, Mysore-I, Raichur, Shimoga and Uttara Kannada, said the poll panel, which retained the old names of the places.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won in Belgaum-II, Chikkamagalur, Dakshina Kannada-I, Dharwad-II, Gulbarga and Kodagu, while JD-S won in Kolar, Mandya, Mysore-II and Tumkur.

Two independents won from Belgaum-1 and Bijapur-1, from where former BJP union minister Basangouda R. Patil (Yatnal) contested.

In six districts -- Bangalore, Belgaum, Bijapur, Dakshina Kannada, Dharwad and Mysore, elections were held in two constituencies each respectively.

A record 99.6 percent voting was registered in the polling on Sunday.

Members of urban and local bodies and lawmakers from the state legislative assembly and parliament from the state form the electorate for the council seats which went to polls.

In all, 125 candidates, including eight women, were in the fray.

The Congress contested in 21 seats, while BJP fought in 20 seats and JD-S in 18.

In the 75-member council, Congress has 28 seats, BJP 30, JD-S 12, and independents four. One seat is vacant.

Of the total, 25 members are elected by the assembly and parliament lawmakers, 25 from local bodies, 11 are nominated by the governor and seven elected from the graduates' and teachers' constituencies.

jeevan, As I told yesterday, Eswarappa will not quit politics as challenged because he will say exactly what you said yesterday! that Siddu didnt accept his challenge!. Eswarappa on record only said that even if congress gets one seat more than BJP, he will quit politics! no where he asked Siddu to accept the challenge! Any how not much to be talked about Eswarappa! he has been bared all in todays newspapers including the BJP colourfull mouth piece published from Manipal!!!. Secondly, as told, Sobakka is nowhere in the scene after the results were announced!. She and many BJP stalwarts were saying that people are fed up of congress government and BJP will win 20 seats and nothing less as per their own internal assessment!. Is it true jeevan!?

Congratulations to congress for securing 13 seats out of 21 contested, which is good, but not great, as they still don't have majority in legislative assembly to get the bills passed, they required to win more than 16 seats. Either way Sleeping CM Siddu's chair is secured, congress did some smart moves by bringing Dr. Parmeshwar to cabinet, which consolidated dalita votes, Tipu Jayanthi also brought them lot of Muslim votes, traditionally Muslims also vote for JD(S).
But since only 6000 odd voters were eligible to vote in each constituency and only candidates photo & name were shown on the ballet, although they were backed by respected party, its hard to predict much from this election.

    But well done congress.

For BJP which has won 6, plus rebel candidate Basavaraj Yethnal (who is staunch Yeddurappa supporter who refuse to withdrew nomination till Yeddy is made the state party president), so technically they have 7 MLC's elected. Their performance is well below par, but not a disaster, as they lost about 9 constituencies less than 100 votes, but still very bad, there is no unit in their party, it not a secret that Yedurappa has not campaigned seriously and played politics in defeat of his own party, because he is isolated with no cabinet post, and keeping him away during ion of candidates, perfect example is defeat of BJP in Shivamogga, which is BSY's strong hold (The candidate was not of his choice).

Prahalad Joshi is finishing his term end of Jan 2016 as Karnataka BJP Party president, it is most likely Yeddurappa will be elected as president, which will make his party lot of good and they can concentrate on Assembly poll in
2 years time, he is the only mass leader who can take Karnataka BJP to commanding position, he has proved it in the past, he has friends in Congress & JD(S), whom he may try to bring back to BJP.
    Anything is possible.

JD(S) has won 4 seats out of 18 contested, only set back is they lost to congress in Hassan, JD (S) strong hold.

BJP people should understand the ground reality regarding peoples changing opinion about popular govt they voted for power 19 months before.Earlier NDA govt headed by Vajapayee was more popular than present one which was not sustained in the next election for the reason that too neglected the common man more particularly agri section. This govt by Modi is more particular about rich and presently poor/common people are living with fear of more tax/cost burden on them resulting living more miserable.
If BJP goes to poll now will see disaster all around all over India.BJP has become Brainless Janatha Party......

If Modi govt continues its strategy of pushing the common man to wall, this trend continues.Secondly, those in the ministry who are known corrupts should be shown doors. There is no short cut to gain common mans trust which BJP has to underline categorically....lest next time bjp may 44 ,& others 444....This is for sure.Samajne. walonko ishaara kaafi hai!!!
