Beltangady, Jan 2: Two unknown assailants attacked a motor bike rider with sword and escaped after inflicting lethal injuries on him. The incident occurred on Vogga-Karinja road in Kavalapadoor village near Punjalkatte on the night of Thursday December 31.

Dejappa Naik (38), an employee of a nursery based at Mangaluru was the victim of this attack. He hails from Ujirandipalke in Maninalkur village. He had made it a practice to go to Vogga Santhekatte on his motor bike from his residence, park his vehicle there, and then travel to Mangaluru by bus.

On Thursday, after work hours, he reached Vogga at around 8 pm, and was returning home on his motor bike, when two unidentified persons, who approached him in a Bajaj Pulsar motor bike from behind, forced him to stop his bike by bringing their two-wheeler across the vehicle. They then hurled choicest abuses in Malayalam at him. The person seated on the pillion swung the sword held by him at Dejappa's neck, it is gathered.

As Dejappa shouted for help, some people came rushing to his rescue, at which the attackers scampered away. Dejappa suffered grave injuries on his hands, arm, neck, and legs. He was taken to the government hospital at Bantwal, after which he was referred to Wenlock Hospital at Mangaluru. From there, he was taken to a private hospital at Mangaluru for advanced care and treatment.

Bantwal police circle inspector, Belliappa, and rural station house officer, Rakshit Gowda, are guiding investigations relating to the case.
