'Want to implement technology in policing'

Mangaluru, Jan 3: New police commissioner of Mangaluru city M Chandra Sekhar took charge of his office on Sunday January 3.

Outgoing police commissioner S Murugan handed over the charge to Chandra Sekhar.

Sekhar is a 1998-batch IPS officer hailing from Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. He began his IPS career as ASP of Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, and later served as SP of Bilaspur and Mandi districts of the same states.

He came to Karnataka on deputation in 2009, and served as SP of internal security division for three months, after which he was posted as deputy commissioner of police, East Bengaluru division from 2009 to 2012. He was absorbed into the Karnataka cadre in 2013. Between 2012 and 2014, he served as DIG of Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services, and before being posted to Mangaluru, he was joint commissioner (crime) of Bengaluru city.

Before taking up IPS, he completed his BTech in aerospace engineering from IIT Kharagpur and worked for Infosys between 1995-'96.

Speaking to reporters, Chandra Sekhar said that his foremost priorities as Mangaluru police commissioner would be to maintain law and order, ensure welfare of police personnel and work towards making the police force more people-friendly.

Asked how he plans to handle the law and order in the communally sensitive city, "I have just come to Mangaluru and I need to study the situation from the policing point of view."

To a question on the misuse of social media, he said, "I want to implement technology in policing. We will try to reach out to people through social media. There are both merits and demerits of social media. If we come across any misuse of social media, we will take appropriate action according to the law."

On what made him switch over from aerospace engineering to IPS, he said, "I always wanted to be in the police, as it has more to do with human relations. It is about poeple and maintainnig relations with people."

I wished outgoing Police Commissioner S Murugan Sir too then he took over the post of Mangalore Chief with one question mark too!!! I.e. how long you survive in our region???? I would welcome similarly the new Police Commissioner, Shankarji too and ask same question!!! How long you stay in Mangalore region???? Udupi and Mangalore regions are easy to work due to two reasons…. Firstly, these regions are not so popular with commercial business for Police Dept and secondly if they any action against any community supported goons, other team will try for their transfer soon!!!!

Mr. S. Murugan has indeed served The City of Manglore with dedication earning admiration and the appreciation of people. His tenure was was exactly for a year during which period he has done his best for the benefit of all concerned. Among the projects that he introduced was The Traffic Wardens Squad which is still in the formative stage.

From all accounts it appears that Mr. Chandrashekar comes to Mangalore with an excellent track record.

Mangalore used to be a peaceful place to dwell in. Unfortunately for some reason or other, crime in the area has escalated. However with his long experience and fund of knowledge I am sure the new Commissioner will play his role to ensure that Law and Order will be retained at the optimum level.

I join several others in wishing our new Commissioner a long and happy tenure in this city.

Welcome to Mangalore Sir, Kindly put your sincere efforts to regain the lost glory of city. Control antisocial elements of the town. Police of the city is in lithargic state files will not move in any office without the interference of political babus. DCP shantaraju sitting on police clearance files months together even after receiving reports from concerned stations. (this is my personal experience) Moral policing is big challenge for you. Wishing you all the best successful carrier at Mangalore.
