Bengaluru: Government makes helmet mandatory for pillion riders

Bengaluru, Jan 4: After much dilly-dallying, the state government has brought into force a rule making it mandatory for even the pillion riders of two-wheelers to wear helmets.

Commissioner in the transport department, Dr Rame Gowda, said that the government has already issued notification about this rule on December 31. The notification has also been published in the state gazette. The rule would come into affect in 15 days, he added.

The rule for the time being, would be applicable to leading cities of the state including Bengaluru.

    What about the fate of kids who goes to school along with mummy/Dad as pillion rider? Whether it is mandatory for them to wear helmet?

    Police penalty is better over death penalty(accident)?

    1.If the riders do not wear helmets with straps- click a picture and fine them and in the second offence withhold their licence.

    2. If potholes cause and accident or better still dug up works pose a threat to riders - click a picture and take Mangalore Mayor to court. If for single offence the Mayor made to pay rs 1 lakh to the accident victim- no one will dare to be the mayor of mangalore with pot holes and dangerous roads.

    The problem is not only with Motorists. The bottom to top officials get away without accountability. If P.I.Ls instead of invites to ribbon cutting is given to these officials, there will be less deaths.

    3.There is total failure of RTO driving road test. It is done in one remote place. The actual road test should be done in roads with traffic. It is not enough for one to know how to change gears.

    4. They say Kambala race is a rarity. However every day the total lack of driving ethics on mangalore roads I guess we do not miss the Kambala race !

    5. We want traffic police for enforcing rules and fining violator - can we expect these AChHE DhIN?

    6. Any garden without proper maintenance and pruning will be a mess in no time. Same applies to cities with people.

    7. We put up rallies to save our culture, against intolerance etc when it comes to civic sense - we should not be this tolerant!! ( turning blind eye)

    1. Most of us carries helmet, but not wear it while riding two wheeler.
    2. Most of us wear helmet in stylish way that is not seemed as they wore it.
    3. Most of us wear helmet just for the view of traffic police.
    4. Most of us wear helmet without ISI mark.
    5. Most of us does not carry helmets as they do not care for the rules.
    6. Most of us wear helmets only after seen police on the roads but not before.
    7. Most of us do not wear it on high way, why?
    8. Put penalty if find without helmet while riding @ any stage to Rupees one thousand, what do you say?

    Instead of clamping penalty please traffic police distribute free helmets for one year and make it mandatory..

    Totally useless. It will benefit only the Helmet manufacturers and the traffic policeman and who know what deal has or might have happened to make such useless rule mandatory even for pillion riders. First should explain where to keep 2 helmets in a 2 wheeler (with other items), Second whether this rule is applicable to kids and students below 16 years of age. How can they wear helmet made for adults?. If so then 3 helmets should be kept in a 2 wheeler. Is it possible. Please have some sense. From now onwards no one will anyone walking in a street because of this rule.

    Another resistance for progression. Two wheelers have two seats so restrict it for 2. No need of age or extra person. Follow the rules and see the changes. Check other parts of the world where they keep two helmets.

    Indeed a very good move and precaution is always better. Without any doubt all the precautionary measures and safety measures help save lives. Let’s hope for a better and a much safer environment for the large number of people use two-wheelers (including the Pillion riders).

    Same time, it’s a money making opportunity for the Traffic Police and the people selling cheap & below the standard helmets on the roadside! Also a kind of headache for the two-wheeler owner to have an extra helmet at all times. Overall, this rule means pocket garam for some – headache for some – and eventually good & safe days for most.

    While it does help save lives, how are we supposed to give a to someone you meet suddenly on the way, an elderly perhaps ? Are we expected to carry helmets for pillion riders every time ? Or reject giving them a just because you don't have a helmet ?
