Mangaluru, Jan 6: Well-known social activist Vidya Dinker will receive the Lawrence Pinto Human Rights Award for the year 2016.

Lawrence Pinto (in whose name the Award is instituted), lived all his life in the service of the working class and the downtrodden. ‘Friends of Lawry’, with the intention of perpetuating his memory, has instituted the – ‘Lawrence Pinto Human Rights Award’.

The awards selection committee of ‘Friends of Lawry’ said in a statement that Vidya Dinker has been unanimously chosen to receive the award for the year 2016, as she has dedicated many years selflessly to fight for people’s rights, taken on the might of the state against the displacement of locals, especially the poor, under the SEZ project, her valiant fight for ecology and in defence of the trees being felled in the name of development and progress, for standing-up bravely against anti-social elements and for doing all this, almost single-handedly.

The award ceremony will be held on Sunday January 24 at Kalaangann at 6 pm.

The award will include a citation, public honour and a purse of Rs 1 lac. Prof M I Savadatti, scientist and former vice-chancellor of Mangalore University will present the award.

I knew Vidya since she was doing her MCJ course at Mangalore University. I knew her always to be bold and brave and thought she needed to be more careful in life. I also knew she is a high risk taker and she could get into trouble for her outspokenness as well as her boldness. Her fiery persona has made her achieve what she has achieved so far. May God bless her.

Congratulations, Vidya, and keep the fight for Human Rights going!

In a male-dominated society, it is a very tough mission you have undertaken. But, as the slogan goes,
"When the going gets tough, the tough get going".

Keep up the good work. Let not challenges/disagrees deter you. Our prayers/wishes and God's blessings will always be with you.

This is not a gift given to Vidya Dinker but indeed a recognition of her self-less services to the people. In our family too we have human rights activist who devotes a lot of her time and attention to the poor and the deprived in the United States. I therefore fully understand the sacrifices Vidya is making to render self-less services to the poor and the needy.

Congrats to you Vidya .. and keep up the good work.
