Mangaluru: Licences of all traffic violators to be suspended for three months: SP

Mangaluru, Jan 8: In order to curb road accidents and instill traffic discipline, the Dakshina Kannada police will initiate a drive wherein violators of traffic rules will be punished with suspension of driving licence for a period of three months, said district superintendent of police (SP) Dr S D Sharanappa.

Addressing a press meet at his office here on Friday January 8, the SP said, "Those who exceed speed limits, jump traffic lights, carry overload or people in goods carriages, drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or use mobile phones while driving will face suspension of their driving licences for a period of three months.

"Earlier, we used to suspend licences and seize vehicles only in cases of fatal accidents, but now licences of all traffic violators will be suspended. We want traffic discipline where rules are followed are strictly," he said.

Giving statistics, he said in rural areas, there were 746 accidents in 2011, 828 in 2012, 891 in 2013, 956 in 2014 and 950 in 2015. "The number of accidents have increased over the years. In 2011, there were 96 fatal injuris caused due to accidents, and in 2015, the number was 152. At least 150 accidents take place every year in the district. The average number of injured in the last five years is 1,500," he said.

"This step (suspension of licences) is being taken on the reccommendation of an SC-apppointed committee for road safety under K S Radhakrishnan, and also as per the Section 19 of Motor Vehicles Act," he added.

"Even in rural areas, students below the age of 18 are driving vehicles. Parents and educational institutions should not allow them to do so, and police too will take strict action. We will write to the educational institutions regarding this," he said.

To a question on the woman who was allegedly gang-raped by Kerala policemen and then escaped from Lady Goschen Hospital, the SP said the police are trying to trace her, and once she files a complaint, steps will be taken to arrest the accused. The district police are also coordinating with the Kannur police in Kerala on the matter, he said.

    Why does the Free left at Lalbagh signal (From KSRTC towards Corporation) suddenly turn No free left on certain days. And the police collect fines on exact that day. Either it should be free-left every day of the month or No-Free-Left every day of the month; if traffic control is the objective.

    Another good thought by district administration/Police department to curb unsafe driving. I would like following points for consideration of safe driving.
    1. Please curb the nuisance/ safety hazard of overtaking from left side by two wheelers and Autos.
    2. Buses clog junctions/roads and pollute the roads by waiting long time in the stops. Most of the time they block one lane and move suddenly to the right without giving signal/ considering smaller vehicles coming from other lane (Example Jyothi Bus Stop).
    3. PLEASE TAKE NOTE PRIVATE BUSES STOP SUDDENLY MID ROAD WHEN EVER THEY SEE A PASSENGER THUS BLOCKING THE ROAD FOR OTHER VEHICLES.
    4. In four lane roads make it mandatory for heavy vehicles/buses to move from outer lane only. It is a regular experience from Kottara Chouki to KPT gradient road ,heavy vehicles moves on both lanes at a speed of 20-25 KMS/Hr.
    5. As JT& L Gonsalves rightly commented suspension of driving license for serious offences/violation is justifiable otherwise department has to initiate traffic record automation to book negative points and fine against the violating vehicle as workable solution.

    Mangaloreans know how to drink. One cannot compare them to the drinking style of Bijapur / Bellary labourers working in Mangalore. So i advise the Mangalore Police not to go hard on this within Mangalore City limits. In the rural areas it may be a different story.

    Can the Mangalore Police give us the statistics of Mangaloreans causing accidents after a social / party drink ? In Mangalore for the Christians ( like in Goa ) it is a custom / tradition to offer your guest a drink of alcohol and a snack of Pork meat.

    Kindly initiate action against the two wheeler's using modified exhaust(silencers) causing heavy noise, especially bullet bikes.The noise is so much disturbing, that, it exceeds the prescribed limits of 84 dcbls. In Bangalore police have taken action and seized such violating vehicles.Even they warned the sellers of these exhausts. Modification of exhaust is violation of Rt act.The police have to use the noise checking device to check the noise level. Kindly stop this menace before it spreads.

    SP Sahib first see how many underaged college students riding two wheel vehiclesin the city. Go colleges and ask the principple to call students who bring vehicle and ask for their licence. You wil know. work on this firstand then fine others.

    A welcome move by the concerned Authority...if implemented strictly I am afraid, we will find a new driver on every bus 🚌 every second day n also would be short of traffic police should they be suspended for accepting bribe...ha.ha..what happened to law against harsh n unpleasant vehicle 🚗 horns?

    What about the Full Head-lights even inside City limits when there are good street light?
    Dimming the head light is compulsory as per traffic rules for the convenience of the drivers of small vehicles coming from opposite direction but no one follows this traffic rule?
    The eye-piercing head lights of big Cars simply blind the eyes of the riders coming from opposite direction and cause many accidents within city limits.

    While the intentions are appreciated, suspension of driving license for a single violation May cause more harm than benefit.
    This could be made applicable for serious offences such as drunk driving or other similar serious violations, it reasonable to bring in negative points system and when such points reach to certain total the license is suspended. This process may require automation of traffic records!

    SP, have you ever seen how people walk from Radha medicals to PVS circle? The footpath interlocks are missing,bikers speed on the footpath most of the time,There are lot of luxury buses parked on footpath on both sides with loading and unloading, goods stacked on footpaths,Parking on both sides of roads that includes double parking!It is not enough traffic police apply locks to offending vehicles once in blue moon and forget but on regular bases.Walking on these footpaths have become a nightmare! Please do something.

    Before take such implementation, Dear SP please attention to the following points:-
    1. Insist the local authority to provide proper foot path for pedestrian.
    2. Deploy @least 3 men at every traffic junction 8am to 8pm compulsorily.
    3. Put Zebra cross marks properly wherever is there.
    4. Put indication marks on all humps on the roads.
    5. Control all city cum service buses to give stops only @ the predefined bus stops, but not everywhere they want.
    6. Take steps during school departure time appoint cops @ every school gates without fail in order to control heavy traffic.
    7. We pay tax to the Govt for enjoying better amenities from the Govt by way of proper road, proper traffic, genuine rules.
    8. If point no. 7 is failed to provide, Dept people have no right to suspend any one from their rights.
    9. Rule is meant for all people, rich or poor should be equally treated.

    Excellent move and congrats to Dr. Sharanappa on his initiative. Apart from the offenses mentioned, serious note should be taken in case of violators who overtake from the left when the vehicle in front drives at the optimum speed. A note also should be made about parallel parking of buses to let passengers alight and board.

    Oh God! Then how should we travel between Mangalore and Udupi!?. All buses will be seized and all drivers driving licences suspended within couple of days from start of this drive!!!. All offenses listed by SP are committed on a daily basis by these buses!

    Some of the traffic signals also need to be corrected.eg: in the signal at lalbaugh vehicles coming from lady hill and pvs are allowed to go to the ksrtc road at the same time.I feel it is dangerous.If we decide to stop and wait for the vehicles to go we will get scolding from other drivers/riders behind.Also a circular should be released regarding the allowed speed limits in four lane roads, two lane roads ,highways passing through city limits etc.

    The intention is good and welcome as one important measures to reduce accidents and traffic discipline, but it may create more opportunity to make more money for corrupt police staff who are used to take bribe from the drivers (as they ask to put the vehicle side first and bribe).

    Ok, nice reading it. But are you serious or after few months no one will remember!
    If licences are cancelled, the road will be empty in a few days.

    It is annoying to drive here because of people's attitude. High beams from front, from back, tailgating. It is like, if you are in the car, the accelerator should be always pressed down, or else they honk like they will die if they stop.
    I follow Lane discipline as much as I can and stick to speed limits, but the others don't allow me to do that. I get a headache with their horns, the rudeness and someone will jump infront of you out of nowhere. Bikes, riks and even cars barge in from the left where they aren't supposed to unless you are on the right of a two Lane.
    Indicators are far more advanced devices that most of the people don't know how to operate.
    Blocks can be avoided, but you find people cutting the lines and even going off road. Check out nanthur. I try to be either on the right Lane or left and not in the middle, but you can't do that.
    In some places, lot of people drive right in front of you on the wrong Lane on the freaking highway!
    not to forget the way people enter the main roads, it is like you on the main road, are completely invisible.

    Rules, fines, that this.... I don't think it will hold much longer. what the Rto must introduce is, before they are handed over the licences, give them a lesson on basic human manners!
    basics of road manners and courtesy. lack of ethics, you can say, is a primary factor in all these fatalities.
    well, that, you can ask educational institutions to do as well than just having them ask their students not to ride/drive.

    Well Said DR1v3R, Mangalore, 100% I agree with you. I also advice RTO to validate Licence only for 5 years then renew it by a Road test & Traffic rules Test. We have some drivers driving Ambassadors with a lad of a 407 n almost 10 people inside especially 4 persons in the front seat!!!! you should see such drivers .. they should be in Circus!!.. some ambassador cars drive in the middle of a lane on Highway (from Bc road to Mangalore) 2wheelers should be given a separate lane on highways, by doing this many accidents can be avoided if rules are followed... some people drive as if they own the road!! When we leave house we need to pray to return safely, the mistake may not be mine... I may die coz of someone else foolishness!!!

    The authorities need to implement it strictly in case of killer buses and wayward youngsters who are a big threat to other law abiding drivers. The authorities should provide safety to women drivers who are intimidated on the Mangalore roads by the bus and auto drivers.

    The period of suspension should depend on the gravity of the traffic offense.A suspension of 3 months is too much for using mobile phones.
    Also in some cases one has to jump signal lights as the bus behind you is chasing and horning loudly .

    Good beginning. We need to go much further. There should be crossings where pedestrians should hae priority to cross. Shrill horns that scare away the pedestrians from crossing the road should also be banned.

    We need draconian measures to punish the unruly and arrogant among us.Then only precious lives can be saved.Th police must release statistics of road deaths in Udupi and Mangalore to raise public awareness.So many young lives have been lost and so many families daily lives plunged into darkness due to road accidents.
