Mangaluru: Gas cylinder explosion sparks fire at Hoige Bazar

Mangaluru, Jan 8: A gas cylinder explosion resulted in a fire at a colony of Tamil families in Hoige Bazar here on Friday January 8.

Three shanties, one of them partially, were destroyed in the fire.

Sources said that the gas cylinder was kept in a shanty where dry fish had been stored, and it burst due to high temperature. Luckily no one was around.

The flames soon spread to nearby shanties. No injuries were reported.

Two fire tenders from Pandeshwar rushed to the spot and managed to douse the flames.

It is learnt the families had saved up several thousands of rupees to celebrate Pongal, the Tamil harvest festival. Most of the money was ruined in the fire and the residents could salvage only a handful of currency notes, sources said. Some utensils and clothes were also damaged.

A loss of about Rs 2 lac has been estimated.

The families in the colony are working at Bunder fish harbour.

    Luckily no one was killed or injured in this fire. I pity the poor families who have lost all their belongings and above all the cash and house. I hope the government will give them some financial help.

    Need to appoint a team of experts to immprove the ways of gas cylinders handling from inception to end user. The local distributor must be accountable to such accidents and has provide sufficient explanation to authorities what was cause of such explosion, it it due to expired cyliders? leakage in pipes or inproper placement in end users' home. It is always better to keep cylinders outside to minimize risk.

    We have to take adequate precautions when dealing with gas. Otherwise many unwanted incidences will happen endangering lives of people.
