Governor advises college girls to give up fashion, lands in controversy

Mysuru, Jan 9: Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala has landed in a fresh controversy after he made an advice to girls to give up fashion and lipstick. The governor said that college is not a platform for a beauty contest.

Vajubhai Vala was delivering the valedictory address of the 103rd Indian Science Congress at Crawford Hall in Mysuru on Thursday, January 7.

"Both girls and boys are intelligent. To achieve something in life you need to sacrifice something. Boys have to give up their specific addictions. Girls need to give up their fashion. You girls come to college for studies and not to participate in any beauty competition. You do not need to get your eyebrows done, apply lipstick or trim your hair," is what Vajubhai Vala said in his address.

It was well known that Vala made these comments with a touch of humour. Vala's comments were welcomed with a loud applause by the audience including girls. But later the women's groups condemned the comments without taking the matter as intended humour.

"What does beauty or fashion have to do with studies? It is something personal. It is an individual's choice to present herself in a specific way. Who said that a fashionable girl is not academic or intelligent? The governor was addressing the valedictory of a Science Congress. Instead of speaking about promoting science, his comments on girls were unnecessary," said a student named Pallavi who was present during the function.

    It is true in a way that the influence of the western world's culture-fashion and food are strongly penetrating to the eastern world and everywhere. I never saw a person four decades back in the U.S. wearing nose ring-lip ring-tongue ring etc, but some of the far eastern and Asian women had. Even ear ring for men was not seen, now many men have ear rings. Now I see both men and women having rings on their face everywhere.

    If the Governor is too spiritual to advise the college girls about their shift in the make up culture, then he should speak at the Indian parliament, how some of the politicians and spokespersons of his own party are dressed with the painting on the face, headgear, thus acting like street swamis. He is talking like, drinking arrack is fine but not brandy.

    @Lukas Malpe,of course he has the right to say of his view.But he has to say on the Point of what he has to come first,thats about science,but not on Fashion.Does he have daughter ?if then how does she Dress?todays world a perso has to present herself/himself in a pleasent way,not too much or too ancient way.I dont say too vulgar.Even Boys should give up what?addicts,agree besides that should respect woman/Girls,not to see as a sex object.He forgot to say that.

    for once at least i agree with you..., in fact to add on to your views, ... a section of today's Hindustani Parents are in so much obsession for US (where fashion concept is generally practiced as less cloth is more fashionable) education to their children that they don't mind living in old age home or ashram's doing raja yoga.

    Secondly, you didn't prove from which university Rahulji was thrown out.

    Swatch Bharath is not at all working. Those were the infiltrated ABVP's in the campus.

    Why then the RSS, VHP, BD and BJP are behind him and hate him.

    Rahulji can go anywhere he wishes.

    HOWEVER CHAAIWAALA WAS BARRED FROM ENTERING INTO USA.

    There is nothing wrong in Honorable governor Mr.Vajubhai Vala advice. Why controversy?

    During the first day of our University lecture at Australian University, the Vice Chancellor gives similar sort of advice, concentrate on your studies, attend regular lectures, don't come to University campus with hang over, give up fashion, body piercing, tattoos, applying make up during the class lectures etc.

    Governor has spoken similar way, why make it a big issue? if you want take his advice, other wise do as you please, at the end he is not the loser, but students are.

    Those students who have respect for elders and give a thought to their advice prosper in life. Others repent later.

    This is the problem with India.Old people giving or transferring their ignorance to young people.In the name of tradition they want you to have the miserable life they had.This is modern century.People do not go in kachhas, they wear trousers or pants. That is practical. Will I go to a 70 or 80 year old doctor or take his advise. His knowledge is stagnant.Let him examine his life before advising others.To compete in this world you have to look good and educated.

    Before advising to others, let him self a example for simple life, he is enjoying most luxurious life, he want a new MODEL BMW when ex governer has a 2 year old benz car. his royal banglow has been modified when he became governor of this state with cores of rupees that too toilet is 32 laks worth, and his big LED TV is 2.5 lacs, when market price was 1.35 lacs,
    in what ground he is advising our ladies/girls to cut down fashion ?

What he has told is 100% correct, because of recent years situation is very much adverse on Girls life.     He gave truthful advice, like any parent or elders of a family.
    Our elders should speak like that.
    Anything in limit is good and anything excess is bad for health and society.
