Beltangady: Elderly couple found murdered at Kakkinje

Beltangady, Jan 11: An elderly couple was found bludgeoned to death at Kakkinje here on Monday January 11.

The deceased have been identified as Varghese (94) and his wife Eliyamma (85), residents near a petrol pump at Kakkinje.

Prima facie, it is said to be a case of robbery and murder.

The couple was reportedly strangled and beaten to death with heavy sticks.

Varghese's body was found about 100 metres away from his residence, close to an adjacent school ground. Prima facie, it seemed like he was strangled with a cloth and then hit on the head. Eliyamma's body was found in a room inside the house and she too seemed to have been murdered in a similar manner.

The house was ransacked, with clothes and papers strewn all over the place. The robbers broke open the cupboards and pulled down their contents, and it is suspected that they took away all the gold ornaments as well as a gold chain that Eliyamma was wearing.

It is learnt that Varghese and Eliyam were living by themselves in the house, while their children are staying elsewhere, with one daughter living abroad. There are no houses nearby either. Sources said that a maid used to come daily for housework and for watering the plantation. It is only when the maid came to work on Monday morning that the incident came to light. It is surmised that the couple was murdered on the night of Sunday January 10.

SP Sharanappa, Bantwal ASP Rahul Kumar, Beltangady circle inspector B R Lingappa and other police personnel along with canine squad rushed to the spot. Forensic and fingerprint experts were also called.

The canine squad followed the scent through the school ground and then entered an inner lane leading up to Kakkinje town. The dogs stopped near a drain close to the circle and took a round of the area. The locals expressed suspicions that as the canine squad caught the scent through an inner lane, a local familiar with the place might have committed the crime.

The bodies were shifted to a private hospital in Mangaluru for post-mortem.

Speaking to mediapersons, SP Sharanappa said that on the face of it, the double murder seemed to have been committed for robbery. "We have taken this case seriously. A team has been formed under the leadership of ASP Rahul Kumar to investigate the case and we are confident that the culprits would be caught within a couple of days," he said.

Beltangady police have registered a case and investigations are on.

Animals have better protection in India than human beings.

It is horrendous that someone could have heartlessly bludgeoned two aged human who did not even have the slightest chance of defending themselves.

Had a dog had been killed in this manner the entire locality would stand up against killer. Peta and all the animal rights groups including Maneka would have huge protests.

God rest their souls in peace.

I am expressing my opinion that at any time, aged parents must not be left alone just as young kids. They are dependents. This is not relating to any specific person, this is general opinion.
Parents are equally precious as our kids, we wont leave our kids alone at home.

Rita easier said than done. I know a lot of elderly couple who find it very difficult to adjust with their own children. They prefer their privacy with minimal intrusion. At times they can be really stubborn. Children cannot put their lives on hold for such parents. Ultimately such tragedies happen and children get blamed.

@Ibrahim,and wjl, mangalore, you both have right, and also not.I personally had my bitter experience which would not like to note here.It is not always children but their Partner wife/husband Plays a role. Both sides understanding and cooperation is required. It is not the question of leaving alone the parents. To kill the old aged People whoever it is because of Money is however is a heinious act, coward. They could have just leave them alone and take the Money, thinking as their parents or grandparents.Oneday however the murderer will be caught and truth will comeout.I am sure some Insider ,Family member was sharp of their Money/land.May their souls find rest in Heaven.

All those who blame the children of murdered elderly couple :

Who does not work till 60 plus (like this couple may have done) to raise their children ? All do, we too got to. That does not mean that we hold our children under our wings till we die. To earn a living, our children need to leave the nest and wander afar. Many times children reach places where older citizens are not welcome or the older people do not adjust to climate. Does that mean that children leave everything and live in villages ?

What we need is an arrangement that the educated youth get jobs in our city/state/country. When that is not possible, obviously we travel beyond this limit in search of a job.

However, we can create a healthy habitat in our own locality in which vigilant members keep note of who is coming in or going out - the children will pay in ten folds if there is such facility. Nevertheless, if our society is filled with robbers and murderers, obviously this is what will happen no matter how young the residents are.

Lets address the problem, not directly the results !

There are solutions like keeping maids or relatives with elderly parents.
Many young men left the job and returned to native only for the reason that there is no one to take care of their parents. There are opportunities available in India where they can ear and relocate aged parents.
But leaving them alone is not at all a right thing..unless we expect such tragedies
Parents need our care and support

    Ibrahim,

There comes another problem too - parents, fearing loosing their independence once moved to there son/daughter's house, disagree to do away with their own property. Then, children get into a fix as to what should be done.

Never mind - we don't know the basis of these two lost souls' living all by themselves, may God grant rest to their souls.

@Ibrahim,mangalore,unless we dont the reason and Person who did this crime, shouldnt discuss further why not this and that.It is not easy to find a maid who is faithful, and stay with old aged Person.Second when both of them were able to carry on their daily work, why not ?You cant put pressure on Senior Person to do as you want.sometimes with all precautions, things happen that you cant avoid.May their Soul rest in Peace. It Looks like some grudge from their own community?

Kids need parents only till they start being independent. We forget to make us independent, our parents sacrificed everything and once they reach 60 plus they will be dependent on kids.
Moral of the story...we should not let our parents, elders live separately rather kids have to take care of them
Many instances of aged parents suffering due to loneliness, sickness and depression..
Parents must be more dearer..never ever hurt them a bit

Feel very sad.Greed and jealous of people leads to any extent. No excuse even for elderly people. When the question of money, property comes even blood relationship is forgotten. No value for the human being. The prima facie of this story shows this is nothing but a murder to rob their house.Let the departed souls rest in peace.Condolence to the bereaved family.RIP
