Comedy Nights actor Kiku Sharda arrested for mimicking Dera chief

Jan 13 (PTI): Comedian Kiku Sharda, best known for his role in the show 'Comedy Nights with Kapil', was today arrested for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the followers of Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda.

Kiku was sent to 14-day judicial custody after police produced him before the court of Nandita Kaushik, Chief Judicial Magistrate here.

He was arrested from Mumbai by the Haryana Police. Kiku was booked on December 31 under section 295 A of the Indian Penal Code (outraging religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious belief).

A case was registered on the complaint of one Uday Singh, the follower of Dera Sacha Sauda, police said here.

While talking to media after his arrest, Kiku apologised and said that he was an artist and "presented the programme on the directions of the channel and programme producers".

"I was given a dress, script to read and directed to act," he said, adding that he had been booked in this case but no action was taken against others including the TV channel.

He said that his aim was only to entertain the public and not to hurt the religious feeling and sentiments of any person.

Dera followers had alleged that Sharda had hurt their religious sentiments in an episode of the TV show aired on December 27.

Dera followers had even protested against the actor, who shot to fame with comedy show "FIR", seeking action against him.

Freedom of Speech has been trampled upon. Our Constitution is at risk. The Dera Chief is not someone from space. Kiku Sharda should be released immediately.

Kapil's comedy nights is a laughter therapy for the masses. The statements made are not intended to insult anybody. Wherever they have been offensive especially with regard to respect to the spouse, the special invitees for the show have reprimanded them. Kiku's apology should be accepted and issue closed.

That way commentators in Daiji are so tolerant! I am living proof. Going the same way I should have been behind bars..instead I enjoy in them every evening...
Making fun is O.k jee but then you should have the spirit to take 'jokes' on yourself too! Don't sulk always!
And if "babas", ''swamis" maulvis, priests, fathers get agitated at the first instance then what about 'lesser mortals'?

It is the case of mimicking and cannot be considered as an insult or use derogatory language against the Guru.(self-styled)

Our Country leaders and prominent personalities, and even celebrities are often being mimicked just for entertainment especially Babaramdev character.

Baba Ramdev is big comedian of India. He was a good joker when Congress was there. Now he is quiet because BJP is there. Kala dhan vapas lao Kala dhan Vapas Lao. Now he minting Kala dhan. No Kala dhan now in India. Because he is running business with KAla dhan. Nonsense patriots of Inida.

I don't recall any raids on Ramdev's ashram during UPA rule, leave alone during NDA rule. How do you know that he has kala dhan? He is not a self-proclaimed Guru either. he is just a businessman who sells products and yoga. All businessmen need not wear suits.
May be he is a fraud, may be not, but we should not judge a person by his looks or ideology and make allegations without proof.
