Mangaluru, Jan 14: Valuables worth several lacs of rupees which were recovered by the police in various cases of thefts were returned to their rightful owners in a property parade held at the SP's office here on Thursday January 14.

Stolen valuables worth Rs 61 lac, including gold, cash, vehicles and other items were seized by personnel of various police stations in the Dakshina Kannada district jurisdiction in 2015, out of which, owners of valuables worth Rs 55 lac were identified. The valuables were symbolically returned to a few of the owners during the programme.

Addressing the gathering, SP Sharanappa said that such property parades were being held from the past four to five years, and that the DGP has ordered the police to hold the parades once every three months. "We could not follow the DGP's instructions but we will do so in future," he said.

"We have an emotional attachment with religious items and ornaments. Prevention of theft is the best way of protecting them. Thefts increase during the rainy season as there is much sound of rainfall which works to thieves' advantage. Every citizen must install anti-theft systems in houses," he added.

Later, interacting with the media, the SP said, "We invest a lot of money on gold ornaments. But we are least bortherd about their security. If we spend Rs 50,000 we can install premium security systems in our houses.

"Isolated houses are prone to thefts. There are instances when murders have taken place for gold and cash. It is better to deposit the gold in the bank lockers to avoid such incidents," he advised.

A demonstration on anti-theft cameras and anti-theft systems was also held on the occasion.

Additional SP Vincent Shanthakumar, ASPs Rahul Kumar, Rishyanth along with circle inspectors and other police officers were present.
