Mangaluru: DRI officers seize foreign currencies worth Rs 81.67 lac at airport

Mangaluru, Jan 14: Acting on specific intelligence, officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mangaluru on Thursday January 14 intercepted a passenger at Mangalore International Airport and seized a huge quantity of foreign currency notes of different countries.

The accused, identified as Mohammed Aouf (28), a native of Bhatkal, was caught while trying to smuggle the said foreign currency to Dubai by Air India Flight IX 383 on January 14 morning.

The foreign currency seized include British Pounds, US Dollars, Euros, Australian Dollars, Saudi Riyals, UAE Dirhams, Qatar Riyals, Oman Riyals and Kuwait Dinars. The total value of the currency under seizure is Rs 81,67,110.

During interrogation, Mohammed Aouf admitted the offence and further investigation is under progress.

The DRI officers have also seized huge quantity of foreign currency notes attempted to be smuggled out by carriers through Bengaluru and Kochi airports recently.
