Mangaluru, Jan 16: As reported earlier, the police have arrested the main accused in the double murder and robbery of an elderly couple at Kakkinje in Beltangady taluk which took place on the night of January 10.
Varghese alias K V Varki (94) and his wife Eliyamma alias Elikutti (85), residents near a petrol pump at Kakkinje, were found dead at their residence on Monday January 11. The murder took place on the night of Sunday January 10.
Addressing a press meet at his office here on Saturday January 16, superintendent of police (SP) Dr Sharanappa said that the accused Raju alias Ravi (26) was traced and arrested in Kallavaddara of Gadag.
"The murder was committed for robbery, however, the stolen valuables are yet to be recovered and further investigations are on," said the SP.
"Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused has 10 cases against him in various police stations in Gadag and Hubballi, and in another 8 cases, the court has issued arrest warrants against him," the SP said.
It is also learnt that Raju took to the crime world at the age of 14, and even as a juvenile, he had become a notorious criminal.
"He had taken employment in Kakkinje as construction worker. On January 10 night, he came to the couple's house on the pretext of asking for water, and killed them between 10 pm and 11 pm. He then robbed jewellery and other valuables from the house and fled from the spot," the SP said.
ACP Rahul Kumar took up the investgation and traced the accused to Gadag, where he was arrested, the SP added.
Further invstigations are on under the guidance of ASP Vincent Shankthakumar and other officers.
