Udupi, Sep 6: The gaiety of Lord Sri Krishna’s birthday spread everywhere in the premises of the famous Sri Krishna Mutt here on Wednesday.

It was indeed a rare scene when the Rain God showered on the statue of Lord Krishna when it was taken to Kanakamantapa on a golden chariot as part of the Vitlapindi Utsava in the noon. Thousands of devotees danced in the frenzy of happiness amidst heavy rain.

Paryaya Krishnapura mutt seer Vidyasagarateertha, Shiruru seer Lakshmivarateertha and Kaniyuru mutt seer Vidyavallabhateertha Swamiji took part in the Vitlapindi Utsava. The religious rituals concluded with immersing the earthen statue in Madhwa Sarovara after the festivities.

Western drums!

Shiruru mutt seer Lakshmivarateertha Swamiji, one among the ‘ashtamathadheesha’s’, opened a unique chapter in Udupi’s Janmashtami celebrations by beating western drums for the traditional ‘huli kunita’.

Thus there came a blend of eastern and western classical. Music lover Shiruru Swamiji had imported Japan-made drums worth Rs 1.5 lakh, specially for the Janmashtami celebrations this year. People who usually hear him singing classical devotional songs, surprised to see him beating the drums!

The seer who always looks for novelty, was in news by designing novel decorations for Udupi Sri Krishna. He also fosters colour fish in the Shiruru mutt premises by setting up an aquarium worth lakhs of rupees. There are rabbits too.
