Dubai, Jan 24: The annual get-together of Emirates Putturians was held on Friday January 22 at Rocky's Club, Regent Palace Hotel in Karama. The event started with a prayer by Uttam at 11:30 am. People from Al Ain, Fujairah, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah etc witnessed the gala event, thereby making a gathering of more than 150.

Ajit Coelho, president of the Association welcomed the gathering. The programme was uplifted by the foot-tapping numbers by the local band 'Party Rockers' comprising Lancy D'Souza, Vincent Rodrigues, Melwyn Antony, Preema Rodrigues, Sony, Eldrich, Patson, Erol, Lovelyn and Roshan.

Lancy Madtha, Lancy Noronha, Lenita and Milton added an extra flavour to the singing. The dance performances by youngsters Ashlyn and Joylin and the Bollywood dance by multi-talented Lenita Noronha mesmerised the gathering. DJ Vicky with his fusion of songs brought the crowd on the dance floor.

Ajith Coelho felicitated the sponsors Michael D'Souza, Westar Globelink Shipping, Simon D'Mello, Joseph Mathias, James Mendonca, Al Faris Group, Lancy Madtha, Pais Brothers, Victor Fernandes, Oswald Madtha, Alex Gonsalves, Jeevan Vas, Glen Lobo, and Kiran of Newskarnataka, with a special note of thanks to Oswald Lobo, the representative at Puttur.

Uttam Menezes was felicitated for his service to the community and his association with Emirates Putturians for the past 10 years. He was also the master of ceremony for the event.

The novelty 'Blow Horns' was of utmost interest amongst the crowd who added value to it by buying at least one, thereby making them active participants for the novelty draw which was coordinated by Antony, Amanda and Arleen. The left over blow horns were bought in auction by Vincent Barboza who in turn became the luckiest person of the day by bagging most of the novelty gifts

The winners bagged free visit visa, Samsung 3-in-1 printer, rice cookers, blenders, gift hampers, Desert Safari vouchers etc.

The delicious food at the venue added with traditional Mangalurean 'dhukra maas' and 'sannas' from Canara Restaurant was enjoyed by the gathering. Gilbert Mascarenhas accompanied by Nirmala Macarenhas were in-charge of the registration.

The day concluded at 5 pm with the peppy baila put forth by the Party Rockers band. It was truly a day to cherish for every Putturian who attended the event.

Having spent more than 25 years in the Persian Gulf region, more than 35 years ago, to the best of our analysis, Gulf area is the only place where people are so vibrant and active in their frequent "get togethers" where they enable the natives to gather periodically and share their joy of being together "home away from home".

Gulf is the only place where people of Indian origin have so much of strength and vitality in creating occasions from time to time and activate their inner feelings and patriotism about their home, their language and their cultural values.

Once we left the Gulf region in 1979, we have had hardly any time to celebrate "community" gatherings because our priorities of life have changed and many more new responsibilities and commitments have taken place in our daily pursuit of life.

Keep up "Putturians" with your charm, talents and willingness to gather together and make best use of your time "when the sun is shining and the time is on your side". The price of Oil was sixtynine cents a barrel in the year of 1957, and we still enjoyed our communal festivals, and that trend has continued ever since with the fluctuation of Oil prices and the changes in the economic patterns. That's the way of life we need to rejoice and thank God for all the blessings.

Best wishes for a continued happiness in life in the Gulf. Keep up the good work.
