First 20 Smart Cities to be announced on Jan 28- Anxious moments for Mangaluru

Daijiworld Media Network- New Delhi (RJP)

New Delhi, Jan 28: Union urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu said on Wednesday that the names of the first 20 cities to be developed as Smart Cities will be announced on Thursday, January 28.

There are 97 cities in the Smart City Challenge, and the government has decided to announce the names of the first 20 winners of the competition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to announce the list at 3 pm, it is expected.

These cities will be developed to have basic infrastructure through assured water and power supply, sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation.

6 Karnataka cities feature in the list of 97 cities from the country, namely- Mangaluru, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi and Davanagere. Three expert committees constituted by the government have finalised the list of 20.

20 cities selected today will get Rs 200 crore aid from the union government in the first year while in the next three years, they will get Rs 100 crore each year. The same amount has to be invested by the cities also to make the cities truly smart as per the plan.

The remaining 77 cities can correct their mistakes and participate in the next competition. 40 cities will be declared Smart Cities again in the year 2016-17 and 40 will be declared Smart Cities in the year 2017-18. Presently the number of applications is 97 out of the proposed 100 smart cities as per prime minister Narendra Modi's plan to develop 100 Smart Cities in the country.

Mangaluru is anxiously waiting for the announcement.

Smart City means we need living citizens of Mangaluru to be wise, alert and responsive to affairs affecting infra, roads, health, cleanliness etc. Administration has to look out for problems affecting Rural areas that in future get added to the city. Water harvesting and Solar power generation have to be given prominence.Safeguarding western ghats for all creatures created by god including humans that need this area to provide water for agriculture and human consumption. This is the time for young who want to live in a smart city with wifi, bars, restaurants etc at cost of NATURE.

Hassan is better developed city in our niebour hood just because Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy. In Mangalore our representatives either Congress or BJP have no political will to do that job inspite Mangalore has all the qualifying factors. Not even proper govt bus stad/private bus stand. Big shame for our political leaders....

I don't think Mangalore politicians have the real will to develop this beautiful city. Who ever got elected as MPs and got good posts in central govt migrated to Bangalore. Applies to both Congress and BJP. They are not doing good for anyone. They should learn from Yediyurappa or Devegowda how they developed their own cities.

sir, you lack positivity Neither Everything cannot be bad nor everything is good. Smart is not said in literal meaning here. It means to give smartness in the living standards of the people by providing improved infrastructure. Tier 1 cities cannot be part of this because it is hard to change things that already exists. So places like Mangalore is chosen. Now coming to other smaller towns/cities it is too early to include them, also this list is not final. I'm not supporting for NDA nor I'm an activist. I'm a citizen of India. I feel this is progress. In India small things like this can bring great change. Let the change begin. Let us not speak negative before it implemented. Jai Bharat!

Smart or not smart city, Mangalore has glaring issues. Many of the well planned projects have been put on hold by vested interests that stand to loose heavily. The sad story is that our inability to go past the community based politics gives rise to these real estates lobbies as powerful politicians. Once they have the connections and power - Mangalore becomes a casualty.

As by and large there is no accountability and as the politicians control the educated IAS officers, no amount of smart brains can produce any result.

The result? the lack of enthusiasm and lacksidal development of Mangalore. What is the reason behind( sociological situation) the rise of bad powerful apples that block smart progress in Mangalore is a question we need to ask ourselves.

Are we Mangaloreans see ourselves as united for progress or are we focused on self interests and divided ?
Hats off to the NGOs and voluntary organizations for the cleanliness drive - these are bright sports.

200 crores n smart city? Are u kidding. This amount was coming to corporation anyways from the central government. They have given a nice name and put extra burden on city corporation. The rest money has to be generated from state n corporation. Think about it..

Can someone elaborate what this term “SMART CITY” entails. Also does it imply rest of the places in India are dumb ?

One needs to just take a walk around town, no proper footpaths, reckless driving, poverty, corruption, religious fundamentalism, lot of construction without proper planning . . . . you name it, its all there in Mangalore. And we are vying for this tag “SMART CITY” ? Just naming a city as a “SMART CITY” without real changes is meaningless. How is it going to change our lives. . . . .
