Mangaluru, Jan 30: Mangala Eye Foundation, a unit of Mangala Hospital and Kidney Foundation was symbolically inaugurated at a press meet held at Eden Club here on Friday January 29.

Director of the Foundation Dr Ram Mohan Rao explained the various procedures that will be performed at the hospital.
"Treatment of glaucoma, ocular trauma occuloplasty, squint and pediatric eye care, retinal diseases etc are some of the procedures the hospital will perform. Our motto is 'vision our mission'.

"Some issues like squint eyes and other eyesight related issues are found in babies. If not cured at the earliest they may lead to an incurable situation and result in vision loss. Hence to treat all such issues the eye foundation has advanced equipment," he said.

The Foundation is equipped with:

1. Top end Visu 160 Carl Zeis Ophthalmic surgical microscope
2. Phaco for cataract (Phaco emulsification unit for cateract)
3. Day care or ambulatory cataract under topical anesthesia
4. Anterior and posterior vitrectomy machines.
5. Infra operative laser
6. Ultrasound machine for eye.
7. Dedicated operation theatre for ophthalmology
8. Five numbers of advanced surgical microscopes.

"Since most of the surgeries are conducted with laser, the patient can have an early recovery as there are less wounds," he said.

Consultant kidney specialist of the Mangala Hospital, Dr Ashok Pandith narrated the growth of the hospital from a nursing home in 1990 to a multi-speciality hospital.

Another ophthalmologist of the foundation Dr Suresh Babu also spoke on the occasion.
