Udupi, Jan 30: Unknown thieves stole cash and gold ornaments valued at nearly two lacs from a house in Kannangaru, Hejamady in the taluk while the family was away. The theft came to light on Thursday January 28 evening.

The family of Ibrahim, who lives in the said house, was away at Mangaluru to attend a programme since a week. The thieves entered the family residence, 'Kote House', by breaking open the lock of the main door, and took away gold ornaments weighing about eight sovereigns and cash amounting to Rs 17,000, it is said. As the key of the almirah was kept over the almirah, the thieves had no problem accessing the gold, it was found.

The family found about the theft on returning home after a week on Thursday evening. The information was thereafter passed on to Padubidri police station. As the station house officer and police circle inspector were deputed elsewhere on duty, other police personnel visited the spot. Sniffer dogs and fingerprint experts also took up the investigation. The fact that the sniffer dog did not catch any scent and it roamed around the compound of the house gave rise to suspicion that this theft would have occurred some days back. Fingerprint experts too could not gather any clinching clues, it is said.

Padubidri policemen have registered a case and begun investigation.
