Udupi: Giant wave kills software engineer at St Mary's Island

Udupi, Jan 31: A software engineer lost his life at St Mary's Island here on Saturday January 30, when a giant wave hit a rock where he was sitting.

Vivekananda Narayana Swamy (26) from Pondicherry is the person deceased. He was working for Wipro Software Company in Bengaluru.

Vivekananda had come to Udupi with four of his friends to attend the wedding of his friend on Saturday. In the afternoon, all of them decided to visit St Mary’s island. After taking a tour of the island, they decided to sit on the rocks and watch the sea. A giant wave hit the rock where Vivekananda and his friend Manikantan were sitting. As a result both of them were thrown into the sea. Manikantan who knew swimming managed to swim ashore while Vivekananda who did not know swimming drowned.

The body is yet to be retrieved. Rescue operation is on.

Malpe police have registered a case.

    Really shocking i was there in moring at st marys island locals said tht waves r terrible .....the good news is tht im alive other wise i would been a headline i was sanding on work taking pics a huge wave knocked but i was inches away from the death thnk god i am alive tody sad butto hear this plzz dnt sas on rocks

    I lived next to a sea and know swimming , even i get goosebumps every time i see people getting into the sea, coz i have seen enough people lose their lives in the sea.

    Why do people go restless every time they see a sea ?

    @Ted Udipi,here one Person has lost his life ,and you are asking a question why one is restless when one sees sea?It is simple.You were living near the water(Sea).SO for you it is not unusual or something Special.when People who never bieng by the water or sea,it is normal to breath the fresh air from sea,like this Person must be lived in a congested Bangalore .I know People who come to from Bombay to Mangalore for having fresh air ,because of congested Bombay,hot and no fresh air.Now try to understand other People and dont put questions.May his Soul rest in peace.heartfelt sympathy to the Family.By the way many People dont understand why Europeans are hungry of sunshine.Because we dont have it all round the year like in India and .Hope I cleared your question.

    No one can cheat ones destiny.
    As someone already commented swimming is a must and we cannot take it for granted when venturing in the water. But here it is simply his bad luck.

    Sad incident. I always felt saftey regulations at St MArys island is not adequate. There must be adequate warning and rescue men at this area. Feeling sad for the lost life of a young man
