Mangaluru, Feb 2: Activists of Hindu Jagarana Vedike (HJV) led by its leader Satyajit Suratkal and other right-wing outfits on Tuesday February 2 evening gathered in front of Suratkal police station and demanded the release of a person arrested in connection to the alleged assault incident at Janata Colony. They also alleged that the local MLA had 'influenced' the police in 'turning' the case against the assaulted persons.

As per a complaint, a gang of 30-40 persons had allegedly attacked five persons of Janatha Colony in Suratkal, and the injured were admitted to hospital. However, differences in the accounts of the incident by the five led to suspicions about the authenticity of their claims. It was later learnt that the police had filed cases against 7 persons including those injured and admitted to hospital.

The protestors claimed that the local MLA had influenced the police to fix the injured victims of the alleged assault. The police arrested one of the accused, identified as Jeevan, after which the activists of right-wing outfits gheraoed the police station and demanded his release.

The protestors also demanded that besides releasing Jeevan, the police should also withdraw the cases filed against the seven. They shouted slogans against the MLA and police personnel.

As the the situation threatened to turn tense, ACP Madan Gaonkar assured the protestors that Jeevan would be released on Wednesday February 3 and also promised that he would speak to the higher officials about withdrawing the cases.

Convinced by the assurances, the protestors finally dispersed.

Mangaluru: Complaint of assault at Janata Colony - Differing claims create suspicion

Updated

Mangaluru, Feb 2: Based on complaint lodged on Monday night, a case had been registered in Suratkal police station as per which, a gang of about 30 to 40 people had allegedly attacked a few residents of Janata Colony in Suratkal before fleeing.

The names of persons injured in the incidents have been given as Madhava Poojary (36), Madhu (29), Anil (40), Shiva Ganiga (24), Chandrakant (20), and Janaki (50), it is learnt. The victims said that they were sitting in front of their houses and were chatting among themselves when the said gang attacked them with knives and swords without any provocation, before making good their escape.

Some of those who were attacked said that they were picked for this treatment because of the fact that local Hindus had raised objections about construction of a mosque at Janata Colony without necessary permission. However, Madhava Poojary, one of the victims, claimed that the locals earned the ire of Muslim youngsters because they were advised against using ganja.

It is said that on Saturday, fight had erupted over the issue of a goat owned by a local named Christine Mascarenhas, after which complaint was filed, duly naming locals Ashraf, Akram, Asif and Tayyeb as accused. On this issue, attempt to strike truce through conciliatory dialogue had been organized in Suratkal police station on Sunday evening between Mascarenhas and the accused. A person who claimed himself to be the son of Mascarenhas said that this attack was an extended part of this episode.

Those who came under attack got admitted into Padmavati Hospital at Suratkal where they are being treated. City deputy police commissioner (law and order), Shantharaju, visited the hospital, and obtained statements from the attack victims.

While some claimed that the attack was the result of opposition to mosque construction, Madhava said it had its origin in ganja. There have also been allegations that it has its roots in the dispute over goat. These developments and accusations have made the general public to smell some sort of conspiracy and handiwork of unseen forces behind them.

hi, do u know who is Satyajit and what's he in to. By seeing your comment looks you are not aware. It's not his hobby to get in to all these. But seeing the local politics and issues because of the minority group, localites rely more on Satyajit than local MLA. There were many instances where it was evident that local MLA tries to monopolize the incidents, but localites just safeguard themselves with the help of people like Satyajit. Do u remember sattle thief instances in and around Surathkal. It was Satyajit and his team who faught for the justice and reduce cattle theifts in the viscinity. MLA , unfortunately always found biased to the minorities. So, unless you know the local situation please don't comment.

    Jossey Saldanha, Mumbai

Jossey, how can you say its a Cock, Bull & Goat story ..., have you been to Surthkal or lived there or any part of Karnataka, don't just generalize. Being living in Mumbai don't justify, we have been to Surthkal & lived there. We are aware what's happening there.

There are lots of things happening in Surthkal, caused by two dominated communities, you can't clap hand with one hand, there might be truth in these HJV activities. Unfortunately law and order situation in Karnataka has completely failed, a CM slaps a officer, a Labor minister boasts about transferring a Dy Commissioner of police for keeping his phone on hold, still CM can't sack him, but just justifies reinstate of Dy Commissioners transfer.

Just analyse the situation and reality. If you organize unwanted Tipu Jayanthi or minority appeasement, such situation will be bound to happen, You are elected to serve people, appease every kannadiaga, not just one or two particular community.

One thing for sure Congress Govt in Karnataka is counting its days, their days are numbered.
    "Vinasha Kaladalli vipareetha Buddi"

Hope our CM & his govt mend their ways, if not, end is near. Stop supporting one party, all are crooks & looters.

    Cheers.

Lexy, my in-laws are from Suratkal. To quote this report “A gang of about 30 to 40 people had allegedly attacked a few residents with knives and swords without any provocation before making good their escape”. Look at the hospital photographs, do they look like knife and sword injuries or self-inflected with 7’oclock blade. Even a staunch Hindu will agree with me.

Thanks for the words. That's what I also wrote in my comments. It's only locals knows the truth and fact. If there are no people like Satyajit and HJV, they may completely wash out Hindus from the vicinity and Krishnapua and surathkal as Minority colony, with the help of the current MLA. So, only locals know the fact. For others it looks like Satyajit is a Goonda or rowdy. We know what Satyajit is and what's he is doing for Hindus

Well said I too agree it is wake up call for us... I support both of them with two questions. (1)-Do not politicians of all parties use these uneducated jobless idiots to create communal tension just to garner votes? (2)-Do not police too get paid for their action or inaction when they favour one or the other party?

When the 40 members attacked about 10 members I have following doubts:
    1) Where all the villagers during this big clash time?
    2) why can't someone noted their vehicle no.?
    3) Everyone is having mobile why can't someone click the photographs of the vehicle or at least one attacker?
    4) How come they cannot recognize at least their cast. It is easy to recognize from 40 members whether they are hindus, muslims or Christians.
    5) What language they are speaking ?
    6) if they attack by sword there would have been a very big wound or a murder. But here nothing shows like that.
    7) how come 40 members caravan easily escaped ? by how many vehicles??

I think daal mein kuch kaala hain...

Hope Police will track the case if in case they are also involved then it is doubtful.
