Udupi, Feb 2: City Municipal Council (CMC) started evacuation of illegal shops in city on Tuesday, February 2.

Around 6 shops which were operating on the footpath between service bus stand and city bus stand were moved out by the CMC workers. The whole operation was overseen by Manjunathiah, the CMC commissioner under the protection of police personnel.

Revenue inspector from CMC Chandra Poojary said that a decision was taken few weeks back to clear all illegal shops in the city in a phased manner. The shops targeted include some temporary shops as well as some shops with permanent legal structures, but with illegal extensions. He revealed that more shops will be cleared in the future with an intention to stop the mushrooming of illegal and unauthorised shops in city.

People in the past have complained to the CMC that the illegal shops hindered the movement of people on the footpaths.
