Bengaluru: PIL seeking consideration of Konkani works in 5 scripts quashed

Bengaluru, Feb 2: The state high court has dismissed a petition seeking directions to Central Sahitya Akademi to take into consideration literature published in all the five scripts when choosing Konkani works for the awards given by the Akademi.

The PIL was filed in 2011 by Eric Ozario from Mangaluru and others. 

The petitioners had asked the court to direct the Akademi to include Konkani literature written in Kannada, Roman (English), Devanagari, Arabic and Malayalam scripts for the grant of Central Sahitya Akademi awards.

The petitioners said that they had written to the Sahitya Akademi in this regard for which the Akademi had replied that it would only consider Devanagari script for grant of awards. This prompted Eric Ozario and others to move the high court seeking direction.

Advocate appearing on behalf of the Akademi said that it had been decided long back by the Akademi to consider only the literature published in Devanagari script for the awards. This practice has been officially recognized, and three Konkani books published in scripts other than Devanagari script were chosen for awards in 1985, 1998, and 2011, he explained.

A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice Ravi Malimata said that the court will not be able to direct the Sahitya Akademi to include the five scripts for consideration of the award.

    It will be better if Konkani publications of Karnataka and Kerala are printed in Devanagari script also so that these can have wider readership across state borders.
