Mangaluru, Feb 3: In a first case of its kind in India, a complex surgery was successfully performed at Indiana hospital on a 20-year-old lady that saved her leg from amputation, informed Dr Jalaluddin Akbar, surgical oncologist at a press meet held at Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute here on Wednesday February 3.

Addressing media persons, Dr Jalaluddin Akbar said, "The patient, a resident of Kannur was suffering from cancerous tumor on her left leg which recurred after initial surgery done elsewhere. The only option in such a situation is amputation. The patient's family had taken her to multiple higher centers where the option given was amputation."

At Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute, a team of doctors consisting of Dr Imtiaz and Dr Abhishek, orthopedic surgeons and Dr Vincent, anaesthetist, led by Dr Jalaluddin Akbar, performed a complex surgical procedure to remove recurrent cancerous tumour and thus saved the limb. This procedure has been done for the first time in India reported, said Dr Akbar.

"The surgery took us 8 hours to complete. She has not been able to walk from past 2 years. But now, after 4 to 5 weeks of the surgery she would be able to walk. Radiation therapy will be given to prevent recurring of the tumour. Now she can lead a normal life with minimal disability," he added.

"We have called this press meet to create awareness among the people that such treatment is available here in Mangaluru at Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute," he said.

Kasim, relative of the lady thanked the surgeon Dr Jalaluddin Akbar and his team for giving her a new life.

Dr Imtiaz, Dr Abhishek, Dr Devanand Shetty, Bhaskar Aras and others were present at the press meet.
