The prosecution had charged Satish Kharvi of smothering his sister-in-law, Mangala Kharvi, on the night of September 19, 2013 by tightening her own sari around her neck. He was also accused of tossing Mangala's body thereafter into the sea to destroy evidence.

It is said that there was illicit relationship between Mangala, who was childless, and Satish. After finding out that Satish was willing to marry, and had planned to enter into an alliance with a nearby girl, Mangala had confronted Satish on the issue and resisted the move, it is learnt. The accused, realizing that Mangala would not allow him to marry, tactfully accompanied her to Srikrishna Math at Udupi, roamed around Udupi with her the whole day, and then took her to Maravante beach in the late evening, it said. Under the cover of darkness, he killed her unnoticed, and threw her body into the Arabian Sea, the prosecution said.

The body of Mangala floated out of sea near Sealand Hotel at Maravante later. The police had zeroed in on the accused on the basis of calls made by his cellphone and also by establishing location of the cellphone. 17 witnesses were examined during the hearings in the case.

Additional district and sessions judge, Rajashekhara V Patil, who conducted trial, arrived at the conclusion that charges levelled against the accused were not proved beyond reasonable doubt. Through a judgment, he ordered for Kharvi's release. Advocate, Ravikiran Murudeshwar, had appeared on behalf of the accused during the hearings.
