Kasargod, Feb 8: The second additional sessions court on Monday February 8 awarded life imprisonment to Umar Byari (43) and also ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 for the murder of 17-year-old Fatimath Zuhara, a resident of Kumble Uluvaru in the district in 2006.
The court had convicted the accused for the offence on February 4 but had posted the case to Saturday to determine quantum of sentence.
The court found Umar Byari guilty of slitting the throat Fatimath on December 28, 2006 at Ujaru Uluvaru near Kumble. Although he had escaped, the police, in a swift operation, had arrested him the very next day. After he jumped bail, Umar was found from Nasik in Maharasthra on August 28, 2014.
Byari decided to kill Zuhara as she refused to reciprocate his love for her, it is gathered. He was working in a mosque near Zuhara's home, and she used to deliver food to him everyday. He fell in love with her during this period.
Forensic evidences played stellar role in nailing the accused, who had murdered Fatimath, daughter of M K Abubakkar-Nafisa couple from Uluvaru. Kumble policemen relied heavily on evidences like hair of the girl found on the shift of the accused, cloth of the accused, piece of his skin found stuck in the nails of the girl, and knife used for slitting her throat, to prove the crime. The killer was acting as if nothing had happened after the murder, and it took determined efforts to prove his involvement with the murder, it is learnt.
