Mangaluru: Shortage of 15 police sub-inspectors within commissionerate

Mangaluru, Feb 9: Efficiency suffers when there is a shortage of personnel in service. Mangaluru police commissionerate too has failed in delivering expected service to the general public due to shortage of personnel. There are 15 sub-inspector (SI) vacancies remain to be filled within the commissionerate. This shortage in the past six months has drastically affected the quality of service in the police department.

As a result of this shortage, it is said that ASIs (assistant sub-inspectors) are overburdened in their duties. They cannot even take leaves and have to work without any breaks during their duty hours.

Look at the facts here. 9 police stations namely Bunder, district forensic dept, CCRB, Kadri, Kavoor, Moodbidri, Mulky, Traffic North and Traffic East have at least one vacancy each for SI post. Some police stations like Urwa, Barke and CCB have even two vacancies for the same post.

Pandeshwar, Traffic West, Rural, Ullal, Konaje, Bajpe police stations have two sub-inspectors each which are not enough to manage these police stations. Automatically the burden falls on the ASIs here. They even do double duties sometimes to keep up with the workload.

The rule in the police department says that 60 % of the SI vacancies should be filled by direct appointment and the rest by promoting the ASIs. But this rule is seldom followed. Even if direct appointment is done, it will take a year for the appointed personnel to reach the respective police stations after the training.

There are several ASIs who qualify to be promoted as SIs. But the department is turning a blind eye without promoting them.

In short, police department cannot offer the required service as expected by common people.
