Mangaluru: Traffic chaos at Pumpwell circle heaps woes on children, commuters

Mangaluru, Feb 10: Mangalureans who were rushing to offices, other destinations and schools found to their horror on Wednesday February 10 morning that a huge traffic jam had occurred at Pumpwell circle, an important link to various parts of the city and outside.

After agonizing wait for the traffic block to clear, a large number of students were found walking to their schools located near and far. Passengers of buses and other vehicles too had no other option but to rely on their legs to reach their offices, business places, etc.

Work on flyover/circle expansion at Pumpwell Circle has just begun, and a huge machine was found parked on one side of the circle in the morning. One side of the circle has been blocked for traffic. As road work is going on at Yekkur road, inflow of vehicles into Pumpwell Circle has multiplied.

Long queues of vehicles including buses were formed on all the roads leading into the circle. Police had to work hard and long to bring the situation under control. The traffic jam persisted from around 8 am to 10.30 am, after which there has been considerable improvement in the situation.

    This is a terrible situation. Some of the pedestrians are walking and crossing roads between life and death. There are no side-walks(footpaths) in most of the places and these vehicles are running without any rules and regulations.

    There are no pavements for the people to walk. One will find only roads to run cars, buses, Ricks, lorries etc. If anyone walks on the roads vehicles will end their lives. I was very sorry to see the pathetic situation of Mangalore Roads. Anyways, our leaders are not bothered about the people but themselves.

    Lakhs have been spent on Signal Lights at Nanthoor Circle. Since the day one,those signals did not shine. Part of the money might have been chiseled out.
    Some time back during Road safety meeting I have given a suggestion to all local authorities requesting the following:
    1 Please avoid large container Trucks,Petrol and Diesel Tankers,LPG Tankers during peak hours such as between 8.00 to 10 am.
    2 I have requested specially with DC,to avoid absolutely,slow moving flexible vehicles such as Cranes,JCB Excavators,Bull Dozers
    and Road Rollers on the road. These vehicles are not only slow down the moving traffic but they are very dangerous too.
    Every one of us just think,a Crane driver is driving while talking on Mobile phone with His mind elsewhere. A Bus in front of Him stopped suddenly to pick up people. The moving crane will ram into Bus and the boom of the Crane will enter the Bus thus killing many standing Passengers. Sooner or later this will happen!
    3 Every where meaning less Banners are installed and attention of the Drivers is set on these stupid meaning less advertisements.
    4 Rickshaw drivers are more responsible for traffic jams. When slowdown starts these Rickshaws will pass the standing vehicles and drive on left and right side of standing vehicles. So the traffic coming from opposite side stalls.
    5 Then comes stupid educated Vehicle owners park their vehicles right under the NO PARK signs. These no Park Signs are installed by Me with good intentions to avoid traffic jams. But these Idiots Park right under the sign.
    This is Smart City of Dumb Drivers.

    Well said Joe D'Souza. What about the intelligent people of Mr. Khader, Lobo, Nalin Kateel, Ramanath Rai and many more MP's? Are these people there only to cut ribbons in happy occasions. And nobody bother to visit and see how to improve the situation? It's really pathetic and becomes worse in the days to come. Money comes and goes to somebody's pocket. Not for real development. Luckily we missed out on not being ed as Smart City. Crores of Rs. are safe in govt. treasury.

    none to blame than ourselves. Yes, how stupid people behave. Trying their level best to screw the situation. no patience and no discipline. ok, one side road is blocked, that doesn't mean you can just occupy the entire road on the other side blocking their way also. How stupid and senseless to do that. but we are very very smart doing that. same thing resulted today's block. if patiently wait for your turn and move, everybody will be able to. Attempt to rush, enter any ways, wrong side, one way, other's way.. nothing... just enter any way and try to escape has resulted such situation. We will never improve and hence we need to live with such problems. now, as some one mentioned, could be daily due the speedy execution of the project. ha ha ha

    Suggestion:
    As a short term measure is it possible to have different timings for schools & Colleges (Early morning) and offices (usual timings) plus entry restriction to heavy vehicles (trucks) - until the flyover is in place. Can we try this on a pilot basis.

    Sometimes we have to forget "Make in India" slogan and resort to far eastern Companies expertise. (Korean, Chines etc.) Who will ute their job precisely, conveniently and on time.
    I was in Mangalore during December and the road leading to my house 4th cross road (hat-hill) was being concreted phase by phase. Believe me sometimes the tenants could not step out of their house s for two days. And those who dared had to walk through the drains. But contractors never bothered others problems or to provide some temporary pathway for peoples convenient.

    Agree. Reminds me of comment by Chinese National about Bangalore Metro. He saw metro work in progress during his first visit. After 1.5 years he visited Bangalore again and he was surprised to see "we would have completed this kind of project end to end by now, but surprised to see 10% progress in 1.5 year"..

    Such is the unfortunate state of our Nation..

    We all know Mangaloreans are Smart and they are smart. It is the outsiders who create the mess. Since this Pumpwell circle is on the way to Kerala and National Highway. First the police should regulate heavy vehicles at peak hours. Mornings 8 am to 10am and evenings 5pm to 7pm heavy vehicles (trailers) should be prohibited, then we should see the difference.

    There is little solution to this mess as the Highway passes through an important junction where the city and highways meet. so the action to this is that the officials do all the necessary developments on war footing and complete projects within timelines.

    without providing proper service road, it will definitely block. The Service road from nanthoor to pupwell is blocked with two barricades, not sure where. Even the service road towards indian hospital is also not connected properly.it should be properly connected to the padil-pumpwell route so that ppl can take left and go towards yekkur side. Instead of this they have to come near to circle and then take left.

    I have heard that plan is to complete this before rainy season which i highly doubt esp after looking at 10 year Suratkal fly over, leasiurely work in progress tokkottu flyover, still doing timepass baikpampady over bridge.

    So I shudder to think about fate of commuters till flyover is completed. Esp during rainy season, not sure how long this block clearing will take!!

    added to that pending padil bridge and concreting at nanthoor.

    All in all expect "burey din" for Mangalore commuters :(

    the other alternate route is through kankanady mahakalipadpu and jappinamogeru which also had traffic jam till 1030 today
