Dubai: 22 teams battle for top honours at SMMC sports tournament

Dubai, Feb 15: St Mary’s Mangalorean Community (SMMC) Dubai organized a regimented one day’s indoor cricket and throwball tournament 'SMMC Sport 2016' Friday February 12 at the Sprite Insportz Sports Club, Dubai, where 22 competent Catholic teams from all over the UAE participated.

As the various sports team members arrived in the morning, registration process was carried by the efficient SMMC volunteers. The inaugural ceremony started with exuberant emcee of the day Lanita Noronha introducing SMMC and welcoming all the participants and guests. SMMC spiritual director Fr Robert Lasrado recited the opening prayer and spoke about the forthcoming events of SMMC and stressed on the importance of the event which brings unity among the people. Fr Lasrado also assured of organizing such events every year with the support of people.

Emcee Lanita Noronha introduced all the participating teams and carried out the oath-taking ceremony. The cricket tournament was declared open with Fr Robert Lasrado symbolically batting in the court. Sprite Insportz briefed to the participating teams about the rules and regulations for the tournament. Fixtures were declared as the tournament format and matches for cricket and throwball started simultaneously in 5 courts.

Throughout the day, guests and prominent members of the Konkan community visited the venue and were kept engrossed in the spectacular matches between various teams of cricket (men), throwball (men) and throwball (women).

In the evening, emcees Clement Cardoza and Lanita Noronha initiated the award presentation ceremony. Conveyor of SMMC Sports 2016, Boniface Carlo rendered vote of thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers and all those contributed to the success of the event. Sponsors of the event were felicitated with mementos by the spiritual director Fr Robert Lasrado including the main sponsor Joseph Mathias – Merit Freight and Johnson Arabia; co-sponsors Sydney Lewis – S J Lewis Engineering Consultants, Boniface Carlo – Middle East Hospitality services LLC, Michael D'Souza – Ivory Grand Hotel Apartments; Lawrence D'Souza, Ghulami General Trading, Winnys Restaurant, Wilmar Shipping, Henry Joseph; well-wishers Francis D'Souza, Suresh Noojaje - Swadist Restaurant, Insportz, Macrotrend Trading; media partner Daijiworld and media support – Bellevision and Newskarnataka.

Winners, runner-up teams, each player of all winner/runner-up teams and outstanding players were awarded with trophies presented by various sponsors and SMMC committee members. Even each participating team was rewarded with a token of appreciation.
