Mangaluru: City bathes in colours of joy as young and old celebrate Okkuli

Mangaluru, Feb 15: The famous Kodial Teru or Mangaluru Car Festival concluded with the participation of a jubilant crowd in a colourful 'Okkuli' on the final day of the six-day festival here on Monday, February 15.

The devotees, young and old alike enjoyed the festival thoroughly, with myriad colours lighting up their gleeful faces.

Kodial Teru was celebrated on the fifth day on Sunday when the devotees in thousands pulled 'Brahma Ratha' bearing the deities till the end of Car Street and back to the temple premises.

On Monday, devotees were seen sprinkling coloured water on one another. People enjoyed dancing throughout the day to the blaring music from various vehicles accompanying the palanquins carrying the deities, which were taken in a procession, and bathed in a lake at Srinivasa Patshala Compound, before being taken back to the temple.

Vasant puja and other rituals were peformed on the occasion inside the Temple premises.

The flag is also lowered on this day to mark the end of the Car Festival.

    Why do youngsters show two fingers and tilt their heads when someone takes their pictures? Is it some sort of a style? Someone tell them, it does NOT look good at all.

    So exciting to see pictures of young and old enjoying Mangaluru Car Festival which brings back so many memories of the 30's and 40's that I seem to be living again the good old days! At least once or twice in my early years I had walked or observed the cars drawing the Brahma deity idols. Happy Kodial Teru!

    So nice to see young and old alike enjoying the 'Okkuli' festival.
    How it is different from Holi?
    From time memorial and generation to generation our culture and traditions remain unchanged in the mind, heart and life of the people. So jubilant they look. Reminds me of childhood days participating with friends in Holi, spraying colors.

    What a day today and yesterday in Mangaluru!
    The Gods too would have been envied to see such grandeur in the Car Street of Mangaluru...
    Lord Venkatesha certainly leaves his abode Vaikunta to reside in Mangaluru 'completely' these 2 days! Omnipresent Yes! But these 2 days reserved for MangALURU!

    In fact the whole of Car Street is so dipped in devotional fervor that it might miss recognizing the 'Lord' walking in the street!
    The Chanting of his Name' in itself is so powerful..Nothing else matters.
    No wonder the great Purandaradasa sang..
    'Ninyaako Ninna Hang Yaako..
    Ninnah Naamada Bala ..
    Ondhu Iddare Saako...
    What a Lord...!
    Completely at the Mercy of his Devotees!!
    No wonder called 'Bhakta Vatsala'...
