Bengaluru: Assembly bypolls - BJP wins in Hebbal, Devadurga; Cong takes Bidar

Updated

Bengaluru, Feb 16 (IANS): The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday won two seats and the ruling Congress one seat in the by-elections held to the state assembly in Karnataka.

The BJP's Y.A. Narayanaswamy won from the high-profile Hebbal assembly segment of the Bengaluru North parliamentary constituency by 19,149 votes, defeating C.K. Abdul Rahman Sharief of the Congress and Ismail Sharieff Nana of the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S).

Y A Narayanaswamy, Shivanagowda Naik, Rahim Khan

Narayanaswamy, a two-time lawmaker from the state legislative council, bagged 60,367 votes, while Abdul Rahman, the grandson of former union minister C.K. Jaffer Sharief, secured 41,218 votes and Nana 3,666 votes.

Similarly, in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) reserved Devadurga constituency in Raichur district, about 510 km from Bengaluru, the BJP's K. Shivanagowda Naik won by 16,871 votes, defeating A. Rajashekhara Nayak of the Congress and Karemma G. Nayak of the JD-S.

In a family battle, the contestants being relatives, Shivanagowda polled 72,647 votes, while Rajashekhara got 55,776 and Karemma 9,156 votes.

In Bidar in the state's north, about 690 km from here, Congress nominee Rahim Khan won by 22,721 votes, defeating Prakash Khandre of the BJP and Md Ayaz Khan of the JD-S.

Rahim polled 70,138 votes, Prakash 47,417 and Ayaz 4,421.

Hebbal registered the lowest voting of 45 percent in the bypolls on Saturday, while it was 61 percent in Bidar and 67 percent (the highest) in Devadurga.

The BJP retained Hebbal and wrested Devadurga from the Congress, while the ruling party wrested Bidar from the BJP.

The by-elections were necessitated by the death of lawmakers -- R. Jagadish Kumar of the BJP from Hebbal, Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli of the BJP from Bidar, and Venkatesh Naik of the Congress from Devadurga.

All crooks have won, we expect no progress of their constituency from these newly elected MLA's.

Congress which used all its power to snatch Hebbal (falls under North Bengaluru lok sabha constituency) from BJP, they deployed 4 minister - Mr. Dinesh Gundu Rao, Mr.Ramalinga Reddy, Mr. K.J. George & Mr. DK Shivakumar to use all their money power & influence, did not yield any dividend.

More than that, surprisingly Muslims having great chunk of votes in Hebbal did not work in favor of Congress, what a sad story.

Devadurga was family fight than political fight, the might of Mr. Shivanagowda Naik won comfortably, he is also a close associate of Mr. Yedurappa, Bidar was surprised defeat to BJP, usually a BJP strong hold, with large lingayat community, but Mr. Yedurappa was not happy with the candidate Mr. Prakash Khandre, he wanted his own candidate there, he did not campaign there and might have played internal politics in defeat of Mr. Khandre. Yeddy is good at these tricks.

He is doing great job but should also avoid getting into any controversy. Kumaraswary plays a very smart game at right time but our Siddhu takes it easy and consider silly. Yes that is why your party spent around 300 crores in Devdurg Constituency for this "small bypoll" distributed at Rs 3,000.00 per voter for a small election. And you Lawmaker Dinesh Gunduroa defended it saying its common during elections. And the result is in front of your eyes today.

Imagine if congress can spend 300 crre in one constituency , what about state election in 2018 for 200 plus constituency , how much it should accumulate & spend ?

Still need a hint from where Sidhu got his 70 lakh Watch !

It's high time for people to go beyond party politics and vote leaders of right credentials and performers.
People should compel political parties to enroll right kind of leaders to lead them in right path.
People are not for parties, parties are for people.
People should make this fact known to parties.
Then only our political scenario will change and then the nation.

    Companies engaging good performers,
Compelling situations should come on political parties to engage good leaders.

    Dear Sunil
Going by your terms, Educated vote for BJP, little bit less educated or illetrates vote for scamgress, this si why they want people to be illeterate. In 1970 Indira Gandhi said, We want to remove poverty and empower women, today after 40 years her grandson also saying same thing in Assam & Budelkhand. So in 40 years nothing has changed !

You are still inspired by that age old philosophy that, bjp can get only votes in city. only educated idiots in the city vote for them. uneducated smart villager vote for cong..etc etc... feeling bad for that.. today people are able to distinguish between the parties very well.. only the self proclaimed intellect are singing like parrots for decades. They succeeed spreading misinformation like in case of Bihar.. but not all places... LOL

JDS is secretly supporting BJP to gain seats..

I think we should vote as per our MLA candidate BJP or congress anyone no problem but good honest MLA should be elected.

Where as for Raghupathi is good candidate for MLA apart from his personal issues which doesn't matter
