Kundapur, Feb 16: For a short period, misunderstanding arose between the principal of Bhandarkars College here and the taluk administration over the sudden order issued by the district deputy commissioner to take over the building of Bhandarkars college for election work from February 16 to 23.

After a meeting was held between the taluk administration and principal of the college on Monday morning, the air cleared a bit, and it was decided to hand over the building to the taluk administration for a week.

Assistant commissioner, S Aswathi, who was in an angry mood, speaking about the hesitation on the part of the college management to hand over the building, said that the officials do not want to create any obstacles in the running of college classes, nor was it needed to declare holiday for students. "We had served notice seeking the college building for election duty. Although we tried to contact the principal to discuss the issue, he was not available. It is regrettable that he did not have the time to respond to the call of the taluk administration," she said.

Taluk tahsildar, Gayatri Nayak, noted that during the gram panchayat election last, the concerned had faced lost of problems on this front. Therefore, she said, the college building was taken over in the backdrop of taluk and zilla panchayat elections under the orders of the deputy commissioner of the district. She said that rooms will be taken over for the work without creating problems for the functioning of students and lecturers.

College principal, Dr N P Narayana Shetty, said he has not violated orders of the deputy commissioner. He regretted the fact that the district administration had suddenly issued order at a time examinations of PU students are on and when the concerned are in a hurry to complete remaining lessons for degree classes.

It was finally decided to take portion of the building as deemed necessary by the taluk administration between February 16 and 23, duly appointing one of the two principals as nodal officer. Deputy superintendent of police, Manjunath, police circle inspector, Diwakar, police sub-inspector, Nassir Hussain, and municipal chief officer, Gopalakrishna, as well as some others were present at the meeting.
