Udupi, Feb 18: Dr Narayana Sabhahit, registrar, Manipal University on Thursday February 18 inaugurated the three-day annual core communication fest, 'Article 19' at School of Communication, Manipal.

Addressing the students, Dr Sabhahit said, "Article 19 has gone through many changes with time. If there were no Article 19, what would have happened?

"Dr B R Ambedkar included the Article 19 in the Constitution so that people have freedom of speech and expression. The freedom of speech and expression seems to be a trivial issue but in reality it is one of the basic human rights people have which is guaranteed by Article 19.

"Sometimes people misuse freedom of speech and expression. Everything has its own limit; and no one should go beyond the limit. Students should follow rules and be bound within the framework of the Constitution in this regard," he opined.

Nandini Lakshmikantha, director of School of Communication welcomed the guests.

Shruthi Shetty, faculty coordinator of the fest and Padmarani, associate director graced the occasion.

'Article 19' fest provides a platform for all students to exhibit their talents and opinons. The fest also aims to sensitize people about the special privilege given to Indian citizens through the Constitution. During the course of the event, aspiring journalists will be made aware about the difficulties faced by journalists in the work field.

The fest will witness the presence of numerous esteemed guests this year starting with Nitin Gokhale, Sathya Saran and Prahlad Kakkar. In addition to this, there is a story telling workshop to be held by the well known 'Terribly Tiny Tales' and a creative thinking workshop by Graffiti Collaborative.

The pinnacle of the fest would be the event on the third day, where a panel discussion involving eminent speakers would take place on the current topic 'Armed Forces (Special Powers) Acts (AFSPA)'.

The fest also includes various competitions for media students across the country such as literary arts, dance society, speaking arts society, music society, dramatics society, film society, digital society and fine arts. ‘Express Award' would be presenting by the SOC to the winners.

The fest will end with a panel discussion and a festive musical evening on Saturday February 21.

All the very best to the Three-day fest 'Article 19'which commenced at Manipal School of Communication. My hats off to Dr. Narayana Sabhahit, registrar, Manipal University for the inauguration. Article 19 has been a great help to all as it has been a basic right for freedom of speech and expression. This should not be misused even though there has been change in this article from time to time. A big thanks to Umesh Marpalli for the beautiful photo coverage which showed all the speakers and well wishers. Good luck and God bless.
