Udupi, Feb 22: “If the compensation for the aggrieved during atrocities or riots are not provided, the victims can submit a request in the specified form to the district legal authority and obtain compensation,” said deputy commissioner Dr Vishal R.

He was speaking after presiding over the district level women and children welfare coordination level meeting held on Monday, February 22. 

“As many as 149 affected women have received compensation so far,” he said.

When his attention was drawn by the officials that it was not possible to pay compensation to some of the affected women, he said that it is possible to obtain compensation by submitting a request in the requisite form.

Public prosecutor R S Jithoori gave details of legal assistance available to the affected in onslaughts. The deputy commissioner also asked the police officials to promptly register complaints of atrocities on women.

“There should be a system in Udupi where medicine should be provided to the root cause of the illnesses. The victims of family atrocities, dowry harassment and other injustices should be provided compensation besides punishing the guilty,” he said. 

He asked the district surgeon and children welfare deputy director to prepare job charts for such cases.

He also asked to provide counselling to addicts of vices taking help from de-addiction centres.

“The union government has consented to open one stop centre for women affected by atrocities who will be provided medical facilities, police help, legal help, counselling and shelter under one roof,” he added.

Zilla panchayat CEO Priyanka Mary Francis, Women’s and children welfare department deputy director Gracy Gonsalves were present.
