'The Mermaid' becomes highest grossing film in China


Beijing, Feb 23 (IANS): Actor-filmmaker Stephen Chow’s fantasy romantic comedy film “The Mermaid” has become the biggest film released so far in China within just two weeks of its opening at theatres.

At the end of the weekend, the film's collection so far stands at $415 million after 14 days of release, overtaking the previous records of “Monster Hunt” and “Furious 7”, both set last year, reports variety.com.

In the past week, it minted $139 million, ahead of $40 million for “The Monkey King 2” and $32.5 million for “The Man From Macau 3”. Both films were released the same day as “The Mermaid”.

“The Mermaid”, which stars Deng Chao, Show Luo, Zhang Yuqi and Lin Yun in pivotal roles, tells the story of a playboy businessman (Deng) who falls in love with a mermaid (Lin) who was sent to assassinate him.
