Udupi: Express Awards ceremony steals show of Article 19

Udupi, Feb 24: The ‘Express Awards’ ceremony of Article 19 was held on Friday February 19, the second day of the three day fest on the lawns of School of Communication, Manipal.






The chief guests for the event were Dr Rao Chelikani and Prahlad Kakkar.

Creative writing, short film direction, script writing etc were some of the competitions conducted. Results of the competitions were declared on the day of the ‘Express Awards’ ceremony and presented to the students by the chief guests.

Following tradition, Article 19 included a grand celebration. As in the previous years, the students enjoyed a fun filled evening dressed up as their pop icons for the theme ‘Pop O Matic’ and danced their stress away.

The second day of Article 19 witnessed a lot of enriching talks from the speakers as well as indulged in a discussion of diverse topics. The day began with a well known speaker and journalist, Nitin Gokhale who owns a website on Bharat Shakti.

This was followed by Sathya Saran, a senior journalist and editor of Femina. She spoke on the role of women in magazines and media in general. Her talk enlightened many of the students. They were made aware of how ‘Woman’ is portrayed as an object in media and how modern technological skills alter as well as force today's woman to attain an image that is defined by the glamorous world.

This power packed presentation was delivered by Ad guru Prahlad Kakkar. The importance of values, not just in terms of advertising but in terms of the self was the crux of his speech.

"Every individual has the capacity to be an entrepreneur by being like a brand," he said emphatically.

The third day of the fest consisted of a panel discussion on the 'Armed Forces Special Powers Act'. Editor of ‘Shillong Times’ and a well known journalist who has been very active in her fight for the North East for a very long time Patricia Mukheim was part of the panel. She has also been part of the National security advisory board.

Another panelist was Dr Rao Chelikani who has been associated with the UNESCO for over 35 years, fighting for human rights in different parts of the world. The third panelist present was Monish who has been studying the issues of the North East as well as finished his doctorate in insurgencies and war associated with USA and Afghanistan.

The entire event from organizing sponsors to getting the decorations ready for the evening was organized by the students.
