Mangaluru: AJ Hospital launches awareness programme on cancer

Mangaluru, Mar 2: A year-long cancer awareness programme jointly organised by AJ Hospital and Research Centre and Rotary International district 3180 was launched at AJ Hospital here on Wednesday March 2.

The programme was formally inaugurated by lighting the lamp by Dr Bharatesh Adiraj, governor, Rotary International district 3180 and A J Shetty, president of AJ Group of Institutions.

Dr Kamalaksh K Shenoy, consultant radiation oncologist, AJ Hospital, presented a brief introduction about the programme and said, "AJ Cancer Institute was started on April 24, 2013. It is the only comprehensive cancer centre in coastal Karnataka which offers all the major facilities to treat cancer. Treatment for all types of cancer is given at economical cost. Cancer information education communication cell was formed to create awareness about the disease. The cell along with Rotary is aimed at creating awareness about the disease and stress on early detection of the disease, and thereby help cancer patients fight and win the battle against this dreadful disease."

Dr Bharatesh Adiraj in his inaugural address said, "I am happy to be associated with AJ institute to create awareness about cancer. The motto of Rotary International is selfless service to society. As part of the drive, awareness programmes on cancer will be organised in different parts of the district. There is fear among the general public about cancer. But through this programme we want to create awareness among the people that there are treatments available for this disease if detected early. I wish this programme helps patients get the best treatment at this Institute."

A J Shetty in his presidential address said, "Cancer is a dreadful disease which is commonly found these days. There are different types of cancer and the main reason is consumption of tobacco products. We have established a cancer detection centre at our hospital, and everyday about 35 to 40 people come here for cancer treatment. This awareness programme will continue for 1 year. I thank Rotary International for associating with us in organizing this awareness programme."

Dr Prashanth Maarla, medical director of AJ Hospital and Research Centre and others were present.

    My hats off to A J Shetty, president of A J hospital for launching this cancer awareness programme. It is a wakeup call for all as cancer is spreading all over the world. Early detection of this dreadful disease will save many lives. There are many remedies for treating cancer and you should take advice from a doctor or better still a hospital. This will help in not spreading to other parts of the body and will prolong your life. There are lot of research going on to eradicate this cancer but it is a long way. I know many people are cancer-free after some treatment worked on them. But early detention is the best solution.
